ACHMED

It changes a dragon, going into the arena. Just look at Fred. On second thought, no don’t do that. I’d never live it down if I ever get compared to Fred, winning one Bloodsport doesn’t erase the months of spectacular incompetence, might be contagious, can’t be too careful. Each dragon survives different things, but I know I’m no longer like the other Catols. I spent too much time in the inner workings to just lie around soaking up the sun. Alice saw to it that the darkness became a part of me, darkness that can’t be banished by anything sometimes. After that only Marvolo made sense.

I admit I drifted afterwards. I only found my way when I passed by when Philip and Rosemerta were arguing. He’s such a pompous skydancer, prancing around telling everyone what needs to happen now please. Not that the Fae is any better. Always flitting off to spend more time in that stinking hole they call the Tavern. I didn’t want to overhear, what was it to me that they were arguing? But, why was the space case arguing that the training wasn’t fast enough? Quality without dilly dallying or some other non sense was what the bird was all about. But, why was he arguing about not taking the time to properly train. What had the space case wanted?

I stood still too long. The flighty fae thought I was there to agree and started to tell the bird that in a very annoyingly high pitched voice. I started to slink away, no one has ever wanted much to do with me since the arena and that’s always been fine with me. Who needs ‘em? The tundra isn’t too bad to be with, it’ll be better when she’s more like me they say, but whatever. But then the fae had the audacity to sink her claws into my hood and start twittering about speed and a more intense program but only when there was a demand for more exalt volunteers from outside Arcane’s borders for even more money for the clan. I tried to brush her off and walk away, I don’t care about the money of the clan, I have mine and get mine as I will and that’s that.

I was going to pin this annoying flutter bush to the ground and rip her pretty little wings off, but then she said something that stopped me dead.

“You won’t be lost any more.”

I’m not afraid of the over sized bird, but I knew he knew I was going to do something, say what you like he is a warrior in his own right. And he would have intervened, but I wasn’t lost. I knew where I was and what I was. I knocked her off and told her as much. And walked away this time. I did hear her say, “If you can’t see it then you’re more lost than I though. Maybe it’s more you lost something in the inner workings.”

Later, the bird came to where I live with the other catols. He explained what the twitterpatter wanted to do. And suggested that I might want to take her up on her offer. All I had to do was give volunteers a very brief training, the more the better and she would take care of keeping the flow of volunteers steady. There would be a handsome payment for me at the end of the week. Even better I wouldn’t have to make any commitments it would only be a few times a year. I said I’d think about it to make him go away. I wasn’t going to do it.

Marvolo was the one that changed my mind, which wasn’t hard, I spent too much time thinking about it. But he said that having something to do helped him with the shakes that happened sometimes.

Now I spend my days doing nothing except impatiently waiting for the times that I can take those soft nothings and beat some skill into them. Best of all they go away. They don’t have to sit there and look at me with big scared eyes. Or with the emotion I will never name that the others sometimes have. I am stronger since going into the inner workings. Anyone weaker would have broken like Fred. But I am not weak, nor will I allow such weakness to survive my program.

Achmed won the first Bloodsport Battle on the tenth day of February, to save Aria from the clutches of Alice and her things! Achmed disappeared into the Inner Workings and has yet to be heard from since! He carries the hopes of the rebellion, fiting for the Goddess of the Arena!
