Fletcher grew up in a loving clan, but his elders were always talking about his exaltion. He was a tiny little weakling. Always getting picked on. Even commonly being mistaken for a hatchling. He knew that serving his flight was a very high honour, but he feared it. Having that much responsibility put on his shoulders and even having his life on the line for his flight. It was too much for him. So Fletcher ran away.

The day before Fletcher would be shipped off to the coliseum to be trained up so he would leave more treasure for his clan, he snuck out of his den and silently worked his way through all the sleeping bodies of his clan and ran away as far as his wings and legs would carry him. The next day, while he was hunting for bugs, Fletcher found Shade and Tetra clearing out a living space. They went on to become best friends. They soon established a large clan.

Fletcher and Shade's hatchlings all grew up to be loyal warriors, honourably fighting for the Gladekeeper. All, except for Ender, who had other plans for his life. Shade, of course kept pressuring him to be exalted, to no success. So, being such a supportive mother, Shade disowned him, leaving him as just another dragon. Fletcher was clearly the better parent at this point, and was always there for Ender. He couldn't help but feel a bit guilty for how Ender was treated, because he is too much like Fletcher. Both fearing exaltion, both loving literacy and classical music. Hopefully never following the same fate, running away from all that he knows just to escape ridicule.
