The Cloudsong is a place rich in culture and opportunity. Hatchlings like Kya who are lucky enough to be born into the Windsinger’s peaceful domain tend to thrive and enjoy each moment of it no matter what fate awaits them. It seems that Kya was fated to be the first exception. She was born to a massive clan of diverse dragon breeds and personalities. From her childhood to adolescence, Kya lived a life of peace and prosperity, but things began to change as she grew older.

Kya was always enthralled by the past and spent much of her time writing about it. She loved working as a scribe and taking notes in her history of Sornieth class taught by one of the clan elders. Unfortunately for her, she was gifted in what was deemed a far more important field than history. The elders discouraged her from her classes and tried to enlist her in various magical studies. They insisted she had powerful primal magic. Soon enough, she would believe them.

It all began the day she met Hera.

The young harpy was under attack by a neighboring clan of brutish warriors, most of which were tough imperials and very fast spirals. Kya heard the sounds of their sneering and snarling as she was passing by, and when she saw a fanged imperial grab the harpy by the wing and throw her to the ground, Kya wanted so badly to intervene. But she had no combat training, no desire to fight. So she tried the only thing she knew how to do: talk them down.

Her gem sensed nothing but sheer hatred and anger, no emotion that might justify this clearly unfair fight. The harpy stood no chance, and, desperate, Kya found it within her to call out to them.

“Stop! You have that poor creature outnumbered, this isn’t a fair fight!” Kya exclaimed, raising her wings high. It was a show of confidence, but Kya couldn't make it seem more than that: a show.

The harpy was lying on the ground, her wing bloodied and crumpled, heavy wounds over the surface of her fragile body. Kya flinched just at the sight of her.

The largest of the warriors, a scarred imperial whose left eye was bloodied and clouded, slowly turned his head toward her. “You say somethin’, little girl?” He snarled at her, a challenge. And once again, all Kya could feel from him was anger. No guilt, grief, fear, or confusion. Not a thing that might provide some context for this brutal attack.

The young skydancer cowered in spite of herself, too frightened to even fly off. The harpy lifted her head and let out a birdlike scream. She waved her talons at Kya, a clear sign urging her to run. “Get out of here, kid!” She hissed. One of the spirals cinched his tail around the harpy’s throat, choking her.

Kya snapped out of her trembling then and tried to look brave. “Let it go,” her voice betrayed her courageous façade by breaking. Her breath caught in her throat.

The imperial leader snickered and took a step toward Kya. She trembled a bit more and stumbled back, yelping as he snapped his jaws closed about an inch from her face. “Pathetic,” he sneered, turning his back on Kya to illustrate just how little of a threat she was to him. “Leave the bird here, it’s going to die from those wounds anyway. Killing one of our neighbors’ yearlings isn’t worth this useless fowl.”

And with that, the band of warriors- if they could even be called that- took to the sky and disappeared.

Kya moved to the injured harpy’s side. “Hang in there,” she said gently. She recalled her magic lessons and channeled everything she knew as she used one of her healing spells. To her surprise, the harpy’s wing bones straightened and clicked into place as all of the wounds faded into thin red lines. It was one of the most efficient uses of healing magic Kya had ever seen. She realized that the primal magic within her was potent, and she finally understood the gift from her deity.

It wasn’t script and it wasn’t history, though she loved those things… It was healing.

Kya could help others with this gift.

Upon realizing this, she slipped the harpy- who’d fainted from the exhaustion of the spell’s effects- onto her back and returned to her clan. She explained what’d happened, and they immediately removed her from her history classes without waiting for her consent and placed her in a group of young mages so she could hone her magic skills. Needless to say, she was very upset that she'd lost something so important to her as script. However, she could hardly refuse when the elders told her it would be selfish not to pursue such a critically important skill.

When Hera finally woke up, Kya explained what'd happened. Hera thanked her and introduced herself as a scout from a neighboring roost, and the two of them had a chance to talk. After a few days of their bonding as the harpy recovered, Hera agreed that she’d stay with Kya and write home to her roost about their findings.

Her life would take a drastic turn when Ransom- a shadow diplomat, visited her homeland. Kya saw a clan she very much admired, and Ransom saw that Kya could use a change of pace. So he extended the invitation to join up with the Twisted Reach as their official healer and scribe, allowing Kya to do both of the things she loved. Kya agreed, ecstatic for the opportunity.

Within the Reach, she met Sakura. Sakura was a brave peacekeeper and wise teacher, and Kya was rather instantly smitten with her. It was only a short time before they fell in love and were mated officially. Kya would also meet fellow healer Calypso and friendly gardener Gleam. She created many close ties within her new clan and couldn’t be happier to serve them in any way they need.
