Rustle of paper, scratching of a quill; wings upon wings shuffling and brushing against books upon reports upon letters upon maps upon graphs.

A dry flutter as some sheets slide to the floor, unnoticed.

A sunbeam through the window; dustmotes swirling gently.

Gentle humming that stops as someone enters.

Empty words, unthinking expectations, eyes that look but don’t see.

A quickly scratched note and they walk away, leaving only empty loneliness and agitated flecks of dust in their wake.

Arcturus sometimes feels like he lives only for the brief moments of respite that his god sees fit to grant him.

The Sanctum is important, he knows that. The Father entrusted it to him, and so he must keep it in good order, must make Him proud, must live up to the hopes his god has in him.

Sometimes, though, as yet another colleague walks out of his office without a single kind word or gesture thrown his way, without accepting his silent offers of tea and company while they read through what he has given them, without considering that maybe, just maybe he likes to talk and be talked to despite the language barrier… Sometimes...

Sometimes, he is tired.

He, at least, understands and listens, but Arcturus cannot help but notice how the tundra’s discomfort grows with every word he needs to speak, every minute he needs to spend in another’s company.

And so, he lets him go.

…Lets them all go.

The Sanctum is the most important, after all.

The Earthshaker always feels so unbearably proud whenever He reaches out to Arcturus and asks about their accomplishments, and that is the one thing Arcturus refuses to ever let go of.
