She doesn't remember being born, has no recollection of loving parents or even a hatchery keeper looking over her. No hatchling's toys, no siblings--in fact, no-one at all. The Queen's first memories are of anger. She remembers when the Tangled Wood was a nightmarish place out to kill any lone hatchling with no hesitation. Even if all she needed for sustenance was grass on the ground, she had to fight the creatures any normal hatchling would have been warned of by their parents for it. The Queen earned her fair share of scars during her first few weeks of life, but most importantly, she survived. Some nights were cold and her stomach was empty, but later she knew that at some points she lived through it all by sheer willpower and the anger that fueled her.

Life went that way for a long time. Fighting back horrors for survival, gorging herself on plants and insects where she could and then going as long as possible on that sustenance alone. After a time, the Tangled Wood came to be a sort of comfort to The Queen; while it was never friendly to her, she grew accustomed to the feel of it all, and it ceased to intimidate her. She could handle herself well by the time she was fully grown, and some of the creatures--terrors though they might have been--grew to respect the strange Skydancer.

For a long time, The Queen avoided other dragonkind. She hid in the twisted branches of the trees and observed them in secret, learning their language where she could and picking apart the behavior of the various species. The first direct contact she ever had was when she at last decided to appear in a public place; a smallish square set up for bartering and performances that seemed to be frequented by several nearby clans. She had barely slunk into sight when a sudden hush fell in the crowd. For one heart-stopping moment, The Queen thought perhaps she had caused the silence, but all heads were turned toward a bent imperial covered head to tail in runes and markings. The Queen craned her neck and stared as a voice issued from his mouth that could not possibly have been his own.

The turner of tides comes at last
On velvet wings;
She shall ascend the throne of power
Leaving the slain in her wake
For she was born with nothing;
And so from nothing will a new age come to pass

And he collapsed upon the ground with a great sigh, as though some burden had been lifted from his shoulders and he could now rest.

The Queen stood rooted to the spot, dazed as dragons flitted this way and that, surrounding the imperial and bearing him up, trying to revive him. She cared nothing for the vessel, but the prophecy... it was hers. She knew it was. Every word seemed to reverberate in her bones with utter perfection, like a song and its harmonies.

She climbed up the nearest tree and watched as the imperial was slowly brought back to consciousness and began to limp back in the direction of his home. In the darkness, she followed after; gliding with malevolent grace from branch to branch until at last they emerged into a clearing where dragons were gathered around a set of fires and spits, eating and telling stories and laughing. The Queen looked with disdain upon them, seeing how weak it all was. They survived here on their numbers alone. She had no doubts that clan members died regularly at the hands of one another and the Woods themselves. They lacked discipline.

And she could see why; as she glanced up to the highest point in the few structures the clan had to offer, she saw the clan's leader. Her lip curled in disdain.

It was simple. She knew the forest like her own paws now, and knew which plants were safe to eat and which weren't. That night, she gathered together a pouch of the most poisonous herbs she knew of; only the most lethal. These, she ground into a fine poultice before sneaking back to the clan and finding that leader. Every nerve in her body hummed as she crept to his head, her eyes drifting over the horns decorated with the spoils of the clan, and she felt no disquiet as she carefully smeared the poultice over his lips with the tip of a reed. Then she slipped back into the shadows to watch.

The leader shifted in his sleep once or twice before his jaws parted in a massive yawn, and his tongue darted out to clean from his snout what his sleeping mind probably thought was saliva. The Queen watched silently as his nerves began to shut down, as his body convulsed and foam trickled from the corners of his mouth. His eyes flashed open for a split second before rolling up in their sockets, and then he lay still.

The Queen left him like that, left his den and his dead body and made her way to the top of the makeshift throne he had been perched upon the evening prior. There she waited for dawn, and for her new clan to wake and see her and bow.
