BIRTH AND BEGINNINGS

If one were looking for a woman who could dazzle them with beauty, blind them with magic, terrify them with her true self and send them fleeing with naught but a grin, one would find all in Pallando. They say that the strongest come from difficult previous lives - your life was hard in a previous life, you must be blessed with strength now, yes - yet her trials came in this life, always in this life and never the next, for Pallando will never die. Her mother, magic so bewitched that it could briefly take a dragon's form, birthed her to a dragon of the earth - then in her still-weakened state, was slaughtered by those who would worship her if they knew what she really was. Before her demise, she begged of the Crowned Head of the Cluster of Stars to take her daughter, and since he owed her a debt, he consented.

Shape-shifter, the dragons of the Cluster whispered to each other, as the hatchling stumbled by, learning how to walk and finding it more difficult than it should be due to her body coming in and out of existence every few steps. Demon, she is, she must be, what else could she be? And the young dragoness heard every word, and her heart was hardened, and when she was old enough to control her magic, she worked it until she was powerful enough to knock mountains from their heights with a simple breath, and no one spoke of her shape again. It was more solid by then, but still, if one looked closely enough, they could see form shivering, crackling, blurring in and out of shape.

Pallando mourns for her mother still, though she knows that her mother can't really be dead- magic can never truly die, even if it inhabits a mortal form for a day or a year, or dies as such. Her mother is alive somewhere, even if she is no longer the mother that Pallando knew. She lived her early life in the Cluster alone, surrounded by dragons yet acknowledged by few and understood by even fewer. For years she longed for death, young years, before she came fully into her power- once she did become as powerful as she is, she realized a death wish was foolish- what she really needed was a way to shed her mortal body so she could access her full potential. But being half-dragon, that too was not possible, and she wept only once for this fact.

"Mother?"
Pallando shook her head to clear it- it was late, and the thunder and lightning overhead were weakening the wards over the Cluster. She'd spent hours re-laying and -casting spells to keep the clan hidden, and only now had paused in her work at her daughter's cautious tone. "What is it, darling?" she asked, sitting back on her haunches and letting her wings unfold in exhaustion.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Anything you want, love." Pallando eyed her daughter as she sat, folding her tail over her paws that matched her mother's in shade and solidity. "Is something bothering you?"
"No, I just... I wanted to know-" Iris shrugged, flicked her tail nervously from one side of her body to the other. "I wanted to know how you and my father met."
"How we met?" Pallando laughed softly. The thunder rumbled in the distance, out over the ocean. "Is that all?"
"Well, and why- Why you became mates. He's so... and you're..." Iris fumbled for words, then sighed and smacked the dirt with a paw curled into a fist. "You're both just so odd, Mother. You can't expect me to never ask."
"You're right, I can't. And I have been waiting for the question." Pallando stood, nodding toward the rocky shore below. "Walk with me, honey." Iris got up and obediently followed her mother down the slope to the beach, where they slowed to a talking pace, picking their way over small sharp stones and large smooth patches of moonlit sand. "Your father has been in the Cluster for a very long time," Pallando began, holding her head high as she walked. Her daughter was growing quickly, but she had yet to catch up to her mother in height. "He's been guarding this place for nearly seventy-five years. He just fell in one day and was allowed to stay. He's... yes, I suppose he is very odd, he's never fit in. He isn't quite... entirely a dragon, I don't think. Well I know he isn't. He's told me. Strange how some things I forget over time. We haven't talked about it since I was young."
"How young?"
Pallando's eyes narrowed as she thought. "Oh, I must have been... twenty, twenty-one years old, oh I felt so old then... when he finally spoke to me. He'd been around since I was small, but he never came near me. And I didn't understand, not why, not him, not anything, until he told me what he was and why he had to wait. And when he told me-" She paused, letting her tail droop onto the sand, the cool surf breaking over her shimmering scales. "When he told me, I couldn't not want him, Iris."
"What's that supposed to mean?" The Skydancer glanced at her mother's tail again- it had momentarily fuzzed out of existence and then right back into being again, as it was wont to do and did often.
"He was special, dear- he was special and so was I, and why shouldn't we be with each other? Sure, he isn't a dragon, and probably doesn't feel what he thinks he does, may not even feel at all, but he certainly does- did- feel something. And that something led to you."
"Oh Mom, gross-"
"No no, listen to me a moment- How does a dragon who barely exists and something that isn't a dragon at all have a child?" Her mother's eyes were furiously dark and they pinned the shivering Skydancer to the beach. "It's happened before, but not with something completely lifeless- not with something dead."
"Dad's dead?"
"No, he-" Pallando made an aggravated noise in her throat, sounding rather like an irritated buffalo. "Never mind. That's the story. What I remember of it, anyway. Your father came up to me when I had finally graduated from the nursery, right after I fought another dragoness into the dirt, when I was covered in blood and filth and was cut up from head to toe but I had won- he approached me and said he'd been watching me forever, waiting for me to grow up, waiting so very long, and wanting so very hard-" She frowned. "Afterward, everyone kept coming up to me and asking what he said, and how I knew what he meant. All they heard was gibberish. But what I heard was plain as day. He asked me to be with him, but he didn't ask at all, if that makes sense- and because I, like you, am drawn to power" -her daughter shifted uncomfortably in the sand- "I said yes. And we had you about a year later."
"Do you love him?"
Her mother sighed softly. "Do you love the ground, Iris, or that tree over there, or the rocks on the ocean floor or the stars? You can admire them, you can appreciate their presence, you can find meaning in their existence and long to see them and hoard them and covet them and wrap yourself around them and profess all sorts of attachment, but you cannot love them."
"That's... awful."
"It's the truth."
They reached the end of the beach, and the blue Skydancer scrambled up the path to the rest of the clan without saying goodbye. Her abrupt exit struck a chill into her mother's heart, and Pallando sat at the base of the path and turned her tired eyes to the swell of the waves. It wasn't long before she felt the familiar stir of air at her back, and she closed her eyes with a faint smile creeping onto her lips. "Hello, Alatar."
The Dragon Guardian nuzzled her neck, her shoulder, and she leaned back against him, relishing the freezing touch of his skin on hers. "Lover."
"Yes?"
"I've missed you."
As always, his words softened her, and she drew him down to sit beside her. They sat together, tails intertwined, watching each other instead of the water.
"What did you tell her?"
"What I had to."
"That I am a monster. That I am incapable of emotion, that I cannot love you. That I do not."
"What else could I have said? She wouldn't understand even if I tried."
He said nothing, but he turned his face away.
"Alatar-"
"It doesn't matter."
He was gone. One moment there, the next aloft, a gentle breeze full of snowflakes and thunder the only indication he had ever been there at all.
