Deepest of All, the Drowned Sight
In the depths of the Sea, much of the rock has lain undisturbed for a thousand years, since the coming of water to Sornieth. There, entombed in rock, they found Minarkan. No one, not even the dragon himself, can make a guess at how old Minarkan might be, or how long he slept in the rock. No one can even make a decent guess at how he survived, besides the suspicion that he has some curious magic of his own. They're not wrong, not exactly, and that means Minarkan doesn't have to correct them. Half-truths are close enough. He could correct them if he wanted to, of course, but it's so much easier to let the past stay dead. And it is, now. Dead and buried and long forgotten, though the deities, it seems, have not forgotten the debt. Whenever he opens his mouth, he feels the sting of the Tidelord's gaze; spreading his wings draws the eye of the Windsinger, and with a flex of his claws, he feels the Plaguebringer's ancient chains tighten around his chest. Minarkan is a warrior of the old way, the way before the world was wrought anew. He doesn't know what can kill him, if anything even can anymore. He was built to fight for a thousand years, to scratch and scrape for the entertainment of the Great Ones who created him. Now he is the reminder, the punished. He doesn't know why they let him wake, and the fear, the terror that they are not done with him yet, that there is still more punishment to come keeps him awake for weeks at a time. Despite his misgivings, he finds he likes his new 'neighbours' well enough. The dragons of Ista are respectful, for the most part, and gracious. Their second-in-command even makes a show of asking Minarkan's permission to continue using his rock as their lair, as though it were Minarkan's choice whether they stayed or not. As though they didn't live beneath the Tidelord's wing. Minarkan appreciated the compliment, though. It made some of the old fire spark up in him again, remembering how it felt to be as a god amongst soldiers. Minarkan is a warrior of the old way. He forgot what that meant for a long time, but slowly he's sinking back into himself. It's not an entirely comfortable feeling, sometimes, but it's good to have thoughts again, beyond fear and pain, and rage. He guards the depths, now. Ista has an extensive territory, and they cannot watch it all, so he watches and waits in the deep parts of the Sea, and defends them. It feels good to have a purpose again, even if he is still waiting for the final Sword to fall. Minarkan is a warrior of the old way. He will never see the sky again, never feel the tug of the wind or smell the ash and smoke of the forges far away. He'll never see the stars again. But that's alright, he thinks. That's alright. He is a warrior of the old way. He'll outlast them all. |
