Master Scribe
A Promise of Exellence
|
I sat in the archives, watching my mother scribble away with her pen. She looked content, drowning in parchment and drying ink. Her gaze did not stray from her paper, and her soft hum was synced to her writing. I crept over toward her and looked over her shoulder. I knew she was writing the records of new dragons that had come in that week, as there were several dragons who had recently come to Crystalwood for refuge. I watched as her pen glided along the paper and let out a soft but audible exhale, bringing attention to myself. My mother, Lanakila, turned her head to meet my eyes, her mind still thinking about the words on the page. "Sorry," I bowed my head. "I know I'm not supposed to interrupt." She smiled down at me. "It's alright, sweetheart. I'm glad you're taking an interest |
more important than others, and you can't get more important than a head scribe."
I tilted my head. "What about Clan Leader? Isn't that the most important."
"In a way," my mother shrugged, "the Clan Leader is important and much more powerful than the head scribe, but a scribe's work is eternal. You become a part of these pages and records that last forever and that future generations will look at for guidance. That seems far more important than telling dragons what to do."
She swung her head back around to her papers and I sat on the thought of being eternally important. I looked around the archives and focused in on the baskets of records along the wall. I walked over and peeked inside one basket, and pulled out the parchment with intricate writing on it. I tried to make out the words but most of them were too big for me to understand yet. I stepped back and looked at all of the baskets, thinking about how I would be an eternal part of that one day, and I suddenly couldn't wait.

Promises Unkept
Kauri grew up expecting nothing but excellence from herself and nothing but treatment of excellence from others. She studied and trained hard, all for that promise of eternal importance. Even when her mother was banished, she stayed to become the most important dragon in the clan just like her mother had said. Unfortunately for her, when her mother was banished, Kauri did not get to fill her shoes. The position of head scribe was given to her apprentice scribe counterpart, Metalloie. With her dreams crushed, she wished she had gone with her mother. Several months after her mother left, Kauri decided to venture out after her. She wasn't sure if she was going to find her mother or settle in a new home, but she knew she couldn't stay in Crystalwood.
