Cinis remembers the floor. That's an odd thing to remember isn't it? But in this moment it was the only thing he knew. He couldn't move, there wasn't anything to move, but he could feel that he was on the floor. He thought it was odd he couldn't see or hear. Why was that? He couldn't move to know why, touch his face to see if he had blinded himself, touch his ears to know they were still there-they weren't.

This is because, you see, Cinis was a pile of ash on the ground concealing a very precious stone. This is what he found next, that he still had the stone. Still? Isn't that what he wanted? He could not answer these questions. He played with the stone, he could manipulate it somehow, move its energy. It's energy moved him, and something else. The air? Air. Cinis realized he couldn't breathe, or just wasn't. That seemed important, shouldn't he breathe? He moved the energy in the stone, perhaps he could breathe. The air moved back and forth moving him. No, this wasn't right. He needed a body to breathe.

Cinis strolled cautiously into the fire clan's territory. He was greeted by the hot rock and the vents releasing boiling air. One exploded almost next to him and he winced at the pain from the heat. He had come to this clan to deal in the gems that are harvested from the cooling magma, but not just any of the gems. He had heard that this clan had found a rare specimen that was somehow infused with wind magic. The only price they had requested was a few fire runestones and the presence of the buyer.

If Cinis was able to acquire this gem he could possibly reach the goal he had been striving for, to become a powerful wind mage. His training had come to a halt when he lacked the pure magic to continue onto more powerful techniques. For a moment he flashed back to his warm study and the sound of the chimes in his window. His teacher was standing in the doorway, silently shaking his head. With this gem he could continue his training.

He came up to a cave entrance in one of the large magmalgus formations. The rock was harshly rough here, and even from his short trek Cinis had scrapes on his feet. He felt the runestones he had brought settle in his bag. Entering the cave he noticed the only light was the dim red/orange glow that was constant in this landscape. A large figure met him in silence, and they both stopped to look at each other. There was not enough light to make out the details, but it appeared to be a large male.

"I am here for the Wind Gem." Cinis said. The figure grunted as if to motion him to follow, and started down an adjacent tunnel. The light grew as they descended, but so did the heat. The heat was different from the warmness of the land of the Windsinger. It was hot, dry, and smelled of sulfur and ash. There was a wind coming from somewhere inside the rock, bringing even hotter air to rush past him.

The tunnel became wider and taller as they traveled deeper. Small rooms lined the tunnel, some with large rocks blocking the doorway. Many of them only large enough for one dragon the fit inside, others for maybe three. The heat was incredibly intense, and Cinis could feel the heat as he tried to breath the searing air. Curious he decided to ask the dark figure, "What are these?"

"Furnaces." was the only response. They passed another and he thought he heard a scratching coming from within.

The heat did not subside as they continued. They came to an open doorway, with a large stone next to it. The room was fairly large with another doorway on the other side. A dragon sat in the doorway, and motioned for him to come, "I will lead you from here" they smiled oddly, "You have come for the gem correct?"

"Yes" Cinis responded, his throat felt like it was going to crack from the heat. The dragon backed away from the entrance and Cinis entered the small room, making his way to the other side. The other dragon watched him the entire time, his eyes searching for something. Cinis buried the unnerving feeling that this place gave him.

He reached the dragon and looked back to see the other figure turn and shuffle away. He followed the dragon into an open cavern, he deducted that this was probably the home of the clan as there were many other dragons wandering about, pushing carts full of rock or digging at the walls. There was a wonderful smell of cooked meat coming from one end of the chasm, where a large pot was boiling. Seeing the pot made Cinis realize how thirsty he was, he only had to stay until he got the gem. Then he could return to his home, and the trickling streams that ran towards the ocean.

Some of the dragons stared, but many didn't seem to notice him as he followed the other dragon. They came to a make-shift room, made up of leather pelts and held up by rocks and metal poles. Entering the dragon asked, "Do you have the runes?"

"Yes" Cinis replied pulling out a bag he had been carrying. The dragon motioned for him to come in. Once he was inside the dragon unwrapped a leather cloth revealing a bright green stone. It was the same shade as his eyes, and the room suddenly felt less harsh. From somewhere unknown he felt the warm breeze from his study, he heard the chimes, and from where he stood he could almost touch the magic of the gem. The dragon held out his hand, and Cinis handed the dragon his bag. They quickly opened it and inspected his runes, they had cost him almost all the treasure he had. Seemingly satisfied they closed it and nodded, "I assume you can find your way out."

Cinis nodded quietly, still focused on the gem in front of him. The dragon slipped silently out of the room. He reached out and took the gem from its place on the leather cloth. The magic was incredible, and instantly spread throughout his body. He forced the hot, dry air away from himself, and created a bubble around where he could be more comfortable.

Exiting the room, the other dragon was nowhere to be seen. Cinis made his way back across the large cavern. The dragons working still didn't notice him, but a few were hurriedly rushing past him. They mumbled something about runes and he assumed that they were going to see what he had exchanged for the gem.

The room he had passed through was still open, and he continued through it into the wider, taller tunnel with the furnaces on each side. The large rocks still laying about or blocking the entrances to the furnaces. He thought he heard the sound of claws, footsteps, and stopped to listen. Nothing. There was no sound other than the distant rumbling and the rush of heat rising from where he had come.

The gem was smooth in his hand, and he gripped it tighter. All he had to do was get out, and he would be home. He started to walk down the tunnel again, he didn't hear the noise again. He passed two furnaces that were blocked off, one that was open, too small for a dragon of his size. Two more that had stones in front, on the other side of the tunnel. Three that were open, all empty, and another one sealed.

He was almost to where the first figure had met him. He heard something shift in the next furnaces, and the sound of stones clattering.

"Who's there?!" Cinis shouted. There was no response, "Come out! I am not deaf!" Still nothing.

He cautiously took a step towards the furnace. Then buried his fear and replaced it with adrenaline. Cinis jumped to the entrance of the furnace and spun ready to face what was inside. He was greeted by a pile of rocks that looked like they had been half-hazardly thrown into the furnace. A pair of eyes opened from some where inside the pile and he was thrown backward into the opposite furnace.

The rocks rose and conglomerated into the shape of a long, thin dragon. It scraped against itself as it turned to face him. He stood up and used the gem to create a huge gust of wind in an attempt to blow the creature back. It was unmoved by his attempt, and stared back at him. Cinis tried again, channeling the magic of the gem into the air. The creature gripped the ground, only slightly pushed back by the gales.

Cinis ran towards the exit of the small room, only to be whipped backwards by a stone tail. The creature did not open its mouth, but spoke nonetheless with a grinding tone. "You.... will be nothing.... ash and dust... is all that will remain." It took a slow step forward, "The stone.... give it to me."

Cinis tried to push down his fear, and his frustration bubbled up. The stone creature took another step. He couldn't lose the gem, trying to take a step back Cinis reached the wall. His mind was scrambling, the creature was advancing slowly and steadily. It was almost close enough to touch him, he had nowhere to hide the gem he had worked so hard for, the gem that would let him become a mage, and rightfully bought. An idea struck him and he had no time to consider, he placed the stone on his tongue and swallowed it.

The creature stopped when he did this, almost glaring at him with blank eyes.

"It's mine, leave!" Cinis managed to say.

For a moment it just stood staring at him, and let out a breath of what appeared to be dust. Then in a blur of movement it turned and left faster than he had expected it could move, and its tail whipped and hit him on the side of the face. His head hit the wall next to him and he yelled out in pain. His vision blurred for a moment and he could only feel the heat of the place he was in and hear the scraping of rocks.

Holding his head Cinis looked up, there was something there, moving at the edge of the entrance to the furnace he was in. A bolt of pain hit him and he closed his eyes. The sound of scraping rocks continued. He opened them again and saw what was happening, a boulder was being pushed across the entrance.

"No!" He yelled, and moved quickly towards the closing gap. It was just over halfway closed, he reached the closing doorway. The gap was big enough for him to leave if he moved quickly. A tail whipped around the boulder and hit him across the head knocking him back.

"No! Let me out!" He yelled at the top of his voice. Jumping up, the pain in his head almost made him pass out. He rushed towards the closing gap, folding his wings in to fit through the small opening. There was movement that Cinis could not distinguish from the surroundings, and a hand gripped his head like an iron brace.

He was eye level with the creature, and he struggled to free himself from its grip. It's grinding voice spoke again, "Dust.....and ash"

It breathed out a stinging mixture of dust and volcanic rock into his eyes, and released his head. Cinis backpedaled screaming. His eyes burned and he could hardly see through the tears. He scrambled back in the direction of the doorway, and could feel his opportunity to escape closing.

The boulder stopped moving and groping around the edges Cinis started screaming, "Let me out! No! It's not yours! Please! LET ME OUT! NO! LET ME OUT!!"

There was no response except for his own heavy breathing, and the sound of the volcano rumbling. His eyes were still watering and his vision blurry but joined in those were tears of fear. He frantically searched his small cell, but found nothing other than a couple rocks. He tried pushing the boulder away but it would not budge, the rocks broke apart when he tried to chip away at it.

That's when Cinis noticed the change, the small cell was heating up. The searing heat of the air was returning, and his bubble of air could not keep him comfortable. The floor beneath him started burning his hands, the walls too when he tried to escape the floor. The name of the place clicked in his head, and the last thing the creature had said to him, a furnace. The creature was burning him alive!

He started screaming again, for anyone, anything. Nothing came.

He lost feeling first, then sight. He could hear himself screaming. Trying hopelessly to escape the burning prison. He could smell something too, it was horrible, and he could not escape if.

Then he heard nothing, felt nothing, saw nothing, smelled nothing, but he still was.

Cinis remembers the floor. That's an odd thing to remember isn't it? But in this moment it was the only thing he knew. He couldn't move, there wasn't anything to move, but he could feel that he was on the floor. He thought it was odd he couldn't see or hear. Why was that? He could move to know why, touch his face to see if he had blinded himself, touch his ears to know they were still there-they weren't.

This is because you see, Cinis was a pile of ash on the ground concealing a very precious stone.

Cinis played with this idea. If he kept constant the energies released from the stone, he could form something out of himself. What did he look like before? He tried to mimic himself in shape. Cinis succeeded. The energy in the stone kept him together. He kept the stone in this form where he thought a brain would be. The green light shining out of his eyes.

He groped his surroundings with the air. He was in a small room, with no exit. The walls were rough. He stayed here for some time, until one wall started to move and revealed a passage. Something that resembled his shape moved slowly toward him, and he played with the air around it. It grumbled something Cinis did not understand, and tried to grab at him. He observed as it passed right through him. Perhaps he could do this too. Cinis stopped the air around the thing, trying to grasp it. It struggled for a moment, obviously in distress. After a couple minutes it stopped, and fell apart. Curious.

He left it there and moved out into the tunnel. Two things approached that resembled Cinis's form. They seemingly called out to him. And increased how quickly they were coming towards him. He froze the air by one of them. Their mouth opened and closed, a panic in their eyes. They gripped their throat. This sent the other into distress as well. They yelled at Cinis, glanced back and forth between the two of them. They yelled louder then came running towards him. Cinis froze the air around this one two. Their eyes bulged and they gasped for air like the other. Both couldn't seem to move very well.

He let the air move and they both fell, gasping. Cinis was developing his senses, and breathed in the sulfuric air. He could hear the other two dragons coughing. He could understand their speech.

"Flaris!" The second scratchily said, then had a burst of coughing, "Are you alright?!"

The other was still gasping, but nodded. Cinis approached them, "My apologies." He did not know where his own voice was coming from, "I was unsure of your identity." Not Flaris looked uncertainly up at him.

"Can you direct me toward the exit?"
