"What is death but a pathway to opportunity?"

______ Once, Windrunner would gather the hatchlings of the clan around a dim, flickering fire, letting the shadows play across his scales in the night as lightning dances above. He'd weave a tale of a ghost that haunts the Shifting Expanse, a ghost that wears fragments of bones and skulls that clatter and rattle as it moves. He said that, sometimes, during the night, you can hear it shuffle across the sands, the bones of his victims warning all dragons in the way of his approach. The hatchlings would cling to each other, terrified, as they've all heard the bones, the footsteps, the rattling- and then Verah would step forward into the light, rolling her eyes and gently pushing Windrunner out of the way. She'd explain that there is no ghost, the rattling and clattering of bones is simply their clanmate, Kzemek, and he's nothing supernatural.

______ What they didn't know was that Kzemek is far, far worse than any ghost. Kzemek hails from the Scarred Wasteland, and is one of the worst kinds of dragons that the Plague Flight churns out--the ones that seek power and survival at all costs, enough to throw away every other tenant of the Flight. He left his home at a young age, seeking knowledge in the magical arts and quickly discovered that death has its own kind of unique magic. He quickly set about finding a lone dragon to kill and sacrifice, and finding the boost to his power addictive, set out to do it again and again. His rituals became more and more complex, designed to drain every ounce of magical power from his victims. He would do what he could to salvage magical energy from corpses he found, but he always preferred live victims.

______ Kzemek's sacrifices quickly became an art form for him. He set limits and parameters on potential victims, only targeting dragons that met his standards and performing complex rituals to sacrifice them in the 'perfect' manner. He took pieces from each victim's skeleton, wearing them as a physical reminder of his own power. Death fascinated him in all of its forms, so when he stumbled across a trail of corpses, torn apart as if in a rage, he was curious. They were destroyed so precisely, despite the clear fury in every action, so he followed the trail, gathering magical energy, until the killer returned to the scene. A guardian as red as he descended from the sky, landing beside him, wondering why he wasn't afraid, why he wasn't running.

______ This dragon was a guardian by the name of Arvon that had lost her charge. Kzemek quickly befriended her and they stuck together, continuing their killing spree across the Scarred Wasteland before they were chased across the border into Dragonhome by a furious and powerful clan. Finding easy victims, they continued murdering until they were forced to flee into the Tangled Wood, then the Sunbeam Ruins. Realizing that they were quickly becoming wanted criminals all across Sornieth, Arvon and Kzemek snuck into the Shifting Expanse and quietly joined the clan of Klaeod the Crimson, deciding to lay low for awhile. Klaeod was originally unaware of who they were but eventually heard of them through an allied clan. He made it clear to them, in no uncertain terms, that they were to stop killing and to stop the ritual sacrifices or there would be consequences. They reluctantly agreed.

However.

______ Kzemek is not one to be denied. His secret sacrifices and rituals continued to draw more and more attention, risking discovery more with each passing day. He and Arvon chafed under Klaeod's rules, but still made magical progress until they found the secret to necromancy. Setting out immediately, they flew back to the Scarred Wasteland to find the remains of Arvon's charge and raised her as a zombie. Ysaldra was never the same, but delighted, they took her home. Her presence drew Klaeod's ire, but he let them stay, until violent incidents involving Ysaldra and Arvon with other clan members reached its peak with the blinding of the second-in-command, Veltarkon. In a rage, Klaeod cast them out, never to return.

______ Furious, the two tried to find a way to get back at him. When a mirror called FierceReaper came calling, looking for assistance at striking against the clan, Arvon and Kzemek were more than amenable. While Arvon sought vengeance more than Kzemek did, he chose to humor his mate, seeing no reason to deny her. Their initial attack was a wild success, taking over the clan for a short period of time and slaying more than half its defenders, including its storyteller, Windrunner, who Kzemek struck down himself to get back at him for all of the nasty (but true) tales he told about him. Unfortunately for the Insidious, as they came to be called, an allied plague clan led by Priya and backed by Arvon's parents came calling, and they were forced to fall back.

______ To add insult to injury, the clan of Klaeod the Crimson has bolstered in numbers and allies, calling in mercenaries and new members... including the necromancer Anduril. During a counterattack on the Insidious, Anduril managed to do what Kzemek could not: restore Ysaldra's mind to her. Horrified at what she had become, Ysaldra renounced Arvon and fled the Insidious to hunker down with Anduril. Kzemek was furious--how dare that half-rate magician banescale show him up!--but Arvon was devastated by her second failure as a guardian. She took off, screaming about the Wyrmwound, and for the first time in his life, Kzemek felt fear for another living creature.

______ Terrified of losing his mate, he followed her all the way back to the Scarred Wasteland. There, they found an Aberration dragon, who offered them new forms in exchange for some of their magical knowledge. Arvon, desperate to escape her identity as a guardian, agreed readily. Kzemek was more hesitant, but, deciding that becoming a Plague breed instead of a Light one might strengthen his chosen field of magic, he eventually acquiesced as well. Now, with twice the brainpower, Kzemek is ready to take Ysaldra back from Anduril, and teach him a lesson that he will never forget...

______ The rattling of bones never ceases, and the distant howls and screeching laughter that roll over the dunes of the Shifting Expanse are never comforting..
