Rhun grew up in a family of inventors in The Shifting Expanse. They were typical lightning dragons, curious and quick and busy, and he was often left alone to fend for himself as a child. Such a quiet hatchling was easy to forget about when you have three different machines threatening to go haywire before lunch. During these times, Rhun would take it upon himself to explore his surroundings. It was during these trips that he awakened his love of flora. The Shifting Expanse is not a place well known for its thriving foliage, but that made it much more interesting to Rhun. Those that did survive were hardy and scarce, making each feel like a rare treasure.

As he grew up, Rhun was expected to take on more duties associated with the inventors’ guild. He did try, at first, but machinery and Rhun just couldn’t seem to get along. He much preferred the natural world to the cold, sparking metal contraptions. His family grew impatient with him as his mistakes grew in number and severity, but they refused to allow him to simply quit. They sent him away to study in the Southern Icefields, a place more desolate and void of plants than even the Expanse.

Rhun was nearly in tears the entire way to what he was sure would be a prison (it was what the Icefields are famous for, after all). And, when he arrived, he was convinced he was right. His guild’s acquaintances seemed uninterested in him beyond ordering him around to help with their own research. One day, he was tasked with collecting samples from a floe a week’s travel away. Eager to escape what felt like eternal servitude, Rhun set out immediately, ignoring the scientist’s half-hearted warnings. Two days into his flight, the snowstorm hit. Native to the Expanse and new to the ice and snow of the Southern Icefields, Rhun didn’t stand a chance. He was blown to and fro until the wind finally dropped him deep into a strange forest.

When he recovered enough to look around, he was stunned. Trees that looked like icy crystals stretched tall into the sky with trunks wider than his body could wind around. The sun shined through them with dazzling prismatic colors, dyeing the world in a rainbow hue. But, the best part was the ground. Plants and flowers of every shape and color grew with impossible vitality that even the Viridian Labyrinth would envy. Rhun’s heart was shaken as tears nearly fell from his eyes. It was the most beautiful place he’d ever seen. Right then, the forest seemed to speak to him. Not in the language of dragons or trees, but in something basic, universal. Without words, he understood the forest and the forests’ desires. He also understood its need for a protector and caretaker. Bewitched as he was, he didn’t even think twice about leaving. Without even the knowledge of where he was on the Icefield, he couldn’t figure out how to contact his temporary guardians, so he didn’t bother. Sometimes, though, he wonders if they looked for him.

It took years to truly know the forest. As he harvested vegetables and flowers and weeded unruly sprouts, the forest taught him of its history. It was created by something resembling a god, perhaps a spirit, as a sanctuary. It was a temporary haven isolated from the outside affairs of Sornieth and unaligned with any power. It was a home for the weak to find solace in. As time passed, and he grew more attuned to the forest, Rhun could sense a connection with it. He could tell when the creeping ivy on the southern border had begun to strangle the frosted violets or when the tiny animals living amongst the forest had eaten too many of the blueberries. He could tell when a dragon with ill intentions approached the borders, and he could feel the trees’ branches sharpen and the vines grow thorns. His soul had become entwined with the forest such that he could no longer leave even if he desired to do so, and in exchange he gained all the power of the forest and more. The wrath of a thousand trees falling upon a wicked soul was truly a sight to behold.

Rhun met Asis when he collapsed upon his metaphorical doorstep. The trees gently brought him into their fold and called their guardian to look over him. He was thin and weary from exhaustion. The trees collected food for the skydancer while Rhun waited patiently for him to wake up with a bowl-shaped leaf of water. He seemed defensive when he finally awoke an hour later, and his tongue was the sharpest Rhun had ever heard, but he softened when Rhun handed him the water and food. He introduced himself as Asis, and he haltingly explained that he was being chased by someone. Rhun told him that there was no need to feel obligated to tell his story, and that he knew that Asis meant no harm if the trees had accepted him. He nursed Asis back to health and offered him sanctuary as is his habit, but Asis declined, as they always do. He left as soon as he was better with a satchel of provisions, and Rhun was alone once more.
