The Wolf by Fever Ray

"Do not close your eyes."

Kamen knows wolves. He knows them more then he knows his own kin, although his familiarity with them extends far as well. To him, there are two things of importance: family and the wolves. Although, more often than not, those two were one and the same.

His family bred them, the trade going back generations. The wolves they bred were massive things, not quite as big as their Imperial companions but just as ferocious. The Imperials were huntsmen, trackers, warriors. Their wolves: brother and sisters in arms.

Kamen considered the creatures to be beautiful. Beautiful in ferocity and beautiful in grace. These creatures were remarkable to him—almost holy—and it was in his blood to protect them and train them as they aged. But never to partner with them.

Countless times he watched dragons come and go, taking one of the remarkable wolves with them. They would become lifetime companions no doubt, friends till the end. A bond Kamen was not allowed to participate in.

His family tried to explain it to him one time: those that played a hand in the cultivating of the wolves could not themselves bond with any. Kamen argued. Oh, he argued. How could they truly understand the wolves without uniting with one? How could they better themselves and the breed without learning from one another? It was one thing to witness the personalities of each in their pup years, but Kamen felt it was not enough. Perhaps it should have been.

As he aged, so did his parents, his siblings. As the eldest, it was his duty to uphold the odl ways and keep their system honourable. Countless clans relied on their well bred wolves. Of course, countless more feared them. Fear was a driving force.

The attack began at midnight. A new moon, so no light could give away the offenders. They were well informed—Kamen was in the lair alone. And so dragons poured out, handfuls at a time, and set fire to the kennels. The wolves, howling in their fury and pain, were trapped within.

The howls had woken Kamen and he was quick to act, but he was only one dragon. Large as he was, he couldn't fight off all the offenders and save the wolves at once. So he launched himself at the kennels and destroyed them with fury akin to an emperor. The flames licked at his scales and the smoke ate away at his lungs until he couldn't stand the fires any longer. Into the cold forest he went, running quickly and hoping to find his precious wolves.

A Skydancer and a Pearlcatcher gave chase, using magics to snap at Kamen's feet. He sparred with them all he could until they drove him to a cliffside overlooking a river and sent him over the age. He blacked out.

When Kamen woke, it was to the chill of the water and the numbing pain of cold in his feet. Blearily, Kamen found his way to his feet. He was alone and frozen, caught in unfamiliar territory. He followed the riverside upriver until he could fly up the cliff he fell from.

Finding home took the rest of the day and it resulted in only seeing the burnt husks of wood that had once been the kennels and the smell of char in the air. Nothing else remained, save for a few unlucky wolves. Quietly, he mourned them and prayed they would find shelter in whatever afterlife would accept them.

There he waited. The winter season bled into spring and still he was alone. He would later learn his family was slaughtered by the same fearful beasts that sought him and his wolves. No breeders meant no war wolves. It was understandable, if horrible to live through. Horrible still knowing he shouldn't have.

His home was destroyed. His family lost to violence. So Kamen left. There was nothing left there for him.

In time, he would find himself further south than where he lived. In time, he would meet a Skydancer with berry-coloured scales who would in turn introduce him to a clan of dragons. Warriors. This, Kamen knew, was something he was familiar with.

And maybe in time he could have a new family.
