Gale's Thoughts: Knight
Knight is not the type of dragon you'd normally find in the outermost ring of my clan. He's second-in-command of the guards, an upstanding citizen by almost all accounts, and lives by a strict moral code that I'm not aware of the exact intricacies of.
I've always known he's a good guy.
He's just a good guy who grew up in an environment that so desperately wanted him not to be good.
After he'd been in Chiaroscuro's ranks for about a year, he finally told me his story. It's very long and very bittersweet, so I'll just hit a few main points.
He grew up with Ilosovic, and throughout the majority of their lives, they were trained to be nothing more than killing machines, weapons to be pointed at an enemy with no regard for the soul inside. When they entered the final stages of their training, they were separated and sent to work with combat masters one-on-one.
In this regard, Knight was far luckier than Ilosovic. His master was done watching young dragons lose their passion and be used up before they'd ever had a chance to live. So while the rest of Knight's compatriots learned how to fight dirty, Knight learned what it was to have honor in battle, to see an opponent as more than just another weapon, and more importantly, learned how to escape.
When he finally left, he didn't leave alone. He took Ilosovic with him, and these were his exact words on the subject: "I still don't know how I did it. His master had all but completely indoctrinated him, and when he looked at me that night, it took him far too long to recognize my face. He must have been just as tired as I was, Gale, because I can't think of another reason he came with me. Maybe he wasn't ready to have the exhaustion beaten out of him too."
They travelled together for years after that. They worked as hired mercenaries and gave themselves a small reputation in the Southern Icefield before moving on to a much warmer climate where no one would know their names. From there they met Jabberwocky, and not much longer after that, they stumbled upon my doorstep.
Knight was very... clinical when describing his life to me, and when I mentioned it to him, he just laughed and told me Ilosovic was the one to go to if I wanted the emotional side of the story, reassuring me that his partner was much better at that part, and that I probably couldn't predict what I was in for.
So, being the nosy, extremely curious clan leader that I am, I talked to Ilosovic.
...Knight was not wrong about my unpreparedness.
