______ The whimsical dreams weren't so bad. I could dream of a world made from gold only to learn that there was a discount on gold treasures. Sometimes the dreams were more serious, like the one that started out with a number of sheep disappearing into a time rift. Pinkerton received quite a nasty bump on the head during the great Rotten Riot as a result of that one. Then there are the scary dreams, the ones that make me bolt out of bed. Those were the ones that made me dread the coming of night. ______ My desire to avoid sleep led me to the works of great authors. I could lose myself for hours in tales of adventure or mystery, easily fighting the dreaded Sandman as I lived the lives of heroes and evil plotters alike. ______ Even with the help of books, I could not go more than three nights without sleep and I soon came to realize something else. Those wonderful stories were growing my mind, making me think more than ever, and giving my subconscious all sorts of new ideas to plop into my troubled dreams. I tried to stand firm and walk past the book shop without even glancing through the window but I simply could not stay away for long. It's like the books are a magnet and I am merely a lump of steel in the form of a mirror. The attraction is irresistible. ______ I honestly believe I would've gone mad if not for Shiny. The little golden coppercoil creeper wandered into my life one random summer day, chasing a beetle right over my doorstep and claiming the chair beside the fan as his permanent spot. I soon discovered an ancient truth about creepers that many have forgotten. Shiny can walk in my dreams at will and while he cannot affect the outcome, he never abandons me, even during the really scary parts.
