Lizardtail might have been born in Shadow territory, but with parents who both hailed from the distant Ice regions she wasn’t prepared for survival in the thick Shadow forests. One unfortunate day she got separated from her parents in the verdant dark forests and in her despair she continued to follow the winding trails. Around her crows cawed in the dark and long shadows seemed to stretch out their fingers in an attempt to reach out and grab her. Lizardtail ran faster, heart beating in her chest as she feared flying through the thick branches, fearing her wings might get snagged in the spiky trees surrounding her.
It was then that she met Greenteeth, a male Coatl who with his verdant green scales and bright wings seemed to light up in the surrounding darkness.
Greenteeth’s colors may not show it but he is a true-born Shadow dragon. As such the forests and hills, dark rivers and hidden swamps held little surprise for him. When he came off age he decided to roam the Shadow lands in search of a new place to call home. Imagine his surprise when out of the growth burst Lizardtail, who was panicked and on the verge of collapsing in sheer fear. It took a while for him to calm her down, and a while longer still until she had told her story of being separated from her clan.
He took pity on her for being so lost and alone, and offered his assistance in helping her find her clan again. Together they followed her footsteps back again. At points her scent had faded from the air and the rocks underneath their feet made tracking hard. But always Greenteeth found the trail back and pointed them in the right direction.
Lizardtail was impressed by how Greenteeth managed to find their way in the eternal darkness. When he urged her to fly amidst the dark trees and eerie glowing mushrooms she refused, too fearful of accidentally striking a tree and hurting herself. Although Greenteeth seemed to be frustrated at this he didn’t press the matter and conceded to continuing their way on paw. This made their journey slower by hours and a new day had started by the time they arrived at the location where Lizardtail had gotten separated from her parents.
Greenteeth immediately noticed that the clan had moved on, their numerous tracks concentrated in the mud of a clearing. But not a single trail except that of Lizardtail led away from this place. Greenteeth concluded that the clan must have taken off on wing. This made it impossible to track them by conventional means, seeing as how their scent had long evaporated from this area. He delivered the bad news to Lizardtail, who slumped into a small pile in the center of the clearing. Her despair at being separated from everyone she knew was obvious. It was also painfully clear to Greenteeth that Lizardtail would never survive on her own in the darkness. Her element might have been Shadow but nobody had ever encouraged her to tap into the hidden strengths their element offered.
Lizardtail had been desperate at that point, convinced she would die without ever seeing who loved her. It surprised her then that Greenteeth offered her to come with him. We might find your family, he said, and even if we don’t at least you won’t be all alone here. She wanted to say no. It was so obvious that he didn’t need her around, and what did she even have to offer? She was easily terrified and couldn’t do a single thing in a fight. But Greenteeth refused to give up and asked again, and again, and again, until finally she did say yes. And so she followed him into the darkness, away from the clearing where she had lost all hope. After a few days he asked her if she would be willing to fly if he found enough space to do so. She said yes and soon they came to a large river which led to the Water territories. They could follow it flying and snap up fish whenever they wanted.
Greenteeth was relieved that Lizardtail finally agreed to flying, her beautiful feathered wings flaring out in the night sky. Her colors were well suited to their environment and in the end she turned out to be a brilliant fisher. This turned out to be to his advantage since he could now focus on keeping both of them safe while she procured food for them. When they got tired they would
settle down on the river banks, huddling together to keep warm.
It took a while for him to open up to her, and just as long for her to relax in his presence. But at one point he found himself talking about his parents and his old life. He had loved it then, but he had wanted a taste of adventure and of the outside world. It was easier to find on his own.
Lizardtail was surprised at the notion that someone could want adventure. To her it seemed that adventure mostly meant being harassed by larger creatures than yourself and being frightened that the next fight would be the one that killed you. Aren’t I in the way of your adventure, she wanted to ask him. She was sure she was, even if he never said so.
Greenteeth seemed to pick up on her question as he glanced at her. There was a warmth in his eyes she had never seen before. I think, he confessed slowly, that finding you was the start of my greatest adventure yet.
They continued to travel together after that, until they found a clan that was welcoming to them both. They quickly befriended the others and learned how to live their live together and with others. At times Greenteeth will still refer to Lizardtail as ‘his adventure’ and she refers to him as her hero. They are seldom seen apart, and live life happily in the eternal darkness of Shadow.
