Alaranath had hatched like any other hatchling ever. She rolled over, the egg shell separating her from the rest of the world splitting as she stretched. Immediately, she heard a murmur, her sensitive ears leading her to turn her head this way and that, taking in the crowd of older, larger dragons that were sitting on tiers of stone watching the hatching. Two dragons were beside the nest, and she looked up at them, but they were watching the crowd in a protective crouch. Beside her was more cracking sounds of the other eggs straining against their occupants, but she paid them little mind. "It's bad enough that you've caught the Contagion," one voice from the crowd of dragons rang out, the words clear enough to her from where she stood. "But we'd hoped that your children would be normal." "She looks like she could pass it off to any of the rest of us," grumbled another voice in the crowd, and Alaranath stumbled her way closer to her parents. "Look, even those markings seem to pulsate with the disease!" Alaranath looked down at her hide, noting the thin faint pink lines that wound up her arms and legs, torso and wings. She didn't feel sick, she felt strong and curious, but she could sense the other dragon's aversion from where she stood. She didn't understand, so she instead pressed herself to her parent's legs. They would protect her. So why, when darkness had come, was she woken up and a whisper of a kiss pressed to her forehead as another dragon came forward, motioning for her to follow? Alaranath turned to look at her parents, but they only looked at the new dragon and nodded, stepping away. She knew she should have tried to run after them, knew she should have said something, but she didn't know the words. "It's alright, little one. Come with me. I have tasty foods and toys you can enjoy for now, and soon enough, a whole bright world to explore." |
