When younger, Astureon was ashamed of his spines - they were in stark contrast to the rest of his body, and others would ask him if it was some kind of genetic defect or disease. He threw himself into studying biology in an attempt to prove them wrong.

He quickly found that it was perfectly normal, and he grew to accept himself, but he still kept his interest in genetics. So when he heard a mention of a clan where genes led to powers - from the crackled guardian, who would grow wounds from nowhere from the visions of death and destruction that he saw constantly, to his cousin, who drew everyone to love her and could control any dragon with a single command - he found his way to Ezequiela, who inducted him into the cult.

After the cult dissolved, he wore their robes for a long time before deciding to give them up. The robes are now worn by other dragons who are planning to leave as part of a rite of passage before embarking on The Search or simply leaving to fight.

He's since become even more immersed in his previous interests in biology, leading to some experiments that almost lost him a front leg and a wing, leaving both somewhat disfigured. He doesn't mind though - it actually looks pretty cool.
