Biography
──────────✽──────────
Isthalo came to the clan looking for the touch of destiny. He knew, in his heart, that he was destined to be a part of something great, something that would be passed down through the ages to come. Whether he wins or loses, Isthalo doesn't really care, so long as he is remembered. He came to Ista searching for someone to read the writing on his skin. There, he was sure, he would find direction. Those who were born with the water's blessing were said to have great powers of divination, surely that would mean he could find someone who knew what the deities intended for him? As any good diviner can tell you, fate is not a thing to tempt wisely. Exactly five days into his badgering campaign with Vela, he found himself alone in the cavernous Casting Cavern that Alyagaster told her fortunes from. She was late, again, and he intended to remind her of it. He was planning the argument in his head, as he often did, working himself up with his own eloquence, when a tendril of magic twisted around his mind. "There's going to be a lunar eclipse tonight," it said, very calmly. "But you won't be able to see it. It'll be cloudy." Later, when Alyagaster finally managed to calm him down, he called it a Voice, but that wasn't quite true. A sudden wave of understanding would have been a better description; it didn't speak, so much as transfer the knowledge into his being. There was no room to doubt the Voice. He accepted it's words as fact without thinking, and dragged Alya out with him to stare for an hour at a cloudy night sky. --- The next time he heard the Voice, he was diving in the Leviathan Trench, doing his bit to feed his temporary clan. "That fish," it said, as undeniable as before, "is going to get acrophobia soon." Isthalo glanced around. Fish? He'd been collecting molluscs; if there were fish around, he wanted to be the one to find them. Above his head, he caught a shimmer of scales. Perfect; it was a big fish, nearly the same size as he was, but as he darted towards it, it slipped away. He chased it for most of the afternoon, through rocky caves and deep trenches, far beyond Ista's usual hunting grounds. They wound slowly up and up into increasingly shallow waters, until eventually the fish was leaping out of the water to escape him. It was fast, far faster than he'd given it's lumbering form credit for, but it was tiring quickly. Unfortunately, so was he. With aching limbs, not used to swimming for so long, and a stitch in his side, he put on one last burst of speed, forcing his body forward with his claws held out before him. Closer, closer, almost there- Two inches away from the fish's tail, his wings breaking the waves above, the water exploded before him. Something hit him in the face, battering him back, and in that moment of surprise, the two Aviar lifted into the sky, clutching the fish between them. Isthalo returned to the clan dejected and empty clawed that night, aching in muscles he hadn't known he had. "It's going to rain tomorrow," the magic said in his mind. "Just so you know." "Oh, shut up." |
