NATURE-2.png 'Nephrite! Please come over and help me!'

'Nephrite be a dear and carry these cherries to the food store please'

'Nephrite, can you get that book for me? It's too high up for me to reach.'

'Nephrite, can you watch the hatchlings for a second? I've an errand to run.'

'Nephrite...'

Nephrite, Nephrite, Nephrite. All day long it's nephrite's duty to respond to the calls of her own name. All day long she carries out small favours for the dragons of the clan. It is called being a general helper. And it is exhausting. This is not what she was expecting her life to be. She didn't know what really to expect when her father called her to him and told her in no uncertain words that she will be sent into the Fire territory, to the clan he grew up with. He was not interested what she thought of it and didn't even let her ask. She didn't intended to ask though. She learned long ago that Shale would not care to reveal his intentions or plans to her. So she went, like an obedient daughter would. And now she was here, in Fire territory where no plant or stone looked like those at home, in a fighting clan full of mercenaries, combat instructors and recruits from all around the Sornieth. It soon became clear that she is not talented in the combat arts. Her teachers did their best and she managed to graduate from basic training but that was all. She was no fighter and she had no other obvious talents that would be of use to a fighting clan. So there she was- a general helper.

Nephrite came back to her quarters, the low-situated chambers especially geared towards dragons that were unable or unwilling to fly for some reason. Her tail hurt, she could feel every spike and every scale all along her spine.Just another day of running after other dragon's needs. She didn't resent it. She was glad that despite the lack of her talent the clan was still kind to her. But she knew that it was more because of Embers 'all dragons welcomed' policy than her own achievement.

She sighed and rooted around in her sleeping furs, moving the folds with her mouth and feet to make them as comfortable as possible for the night. Sleep. Sleep was nice after all day of work. She blew the flame off her lamp and closed her eyes.

She could swear that she had her eyes closed but for a moment. But when she opened them, it was morning, a very early morning. It was most certainly too early to start another day. But why was she awake then.
She strained her ears. Somebody was there, walking outside. She could hear scraping of the talons on the stone, the scuffling sound of wings being brushed against walls. Who could that be at this hour? Or maybe- what was out there at this hour?
She go up from her furs and peaked outside. There really was somebody outside. She could see a silhouette of a dragon moving carefully.

'Who...' she called out into the pre-dawn, her voice trembling a bit. 'Who is there?'
She saw the shadow turn around, heard fabric rustling and after two heartbeats, a head of the mysterious dragon showed from within shadows. A head of a Nocturne.

'You here to babysit me?' asked Spice. Nephrite breathed easier. It wasn't some stranger creeping around or a half-formed nightmare born of Shade. Just Spice. Not that she knew her very well, Spice kept her own hours and pursuits. So what was she actually doing here?

'Nevermind, come along' said Spice not waiting for Nephrite to respond.'We're going.'

'What? Going? Going where?' Nephrite barely had time to shake off her surprise. But Spice didn't stop to give an answer. She turned about and started walking, going towards the nearest lair exit.

Years on, Nephrite would reflect on this moment, but would never be sure what actually made her to follow this strange and abrupt dragon. The only thing that she would know forever is that she would never regret it.

'Wait up!' she called after Spice. 'Don't go out alone!'
They followed the corridor to the side exit and from there up the narrow paths of the cliffs. Or rather Nephrite did since Spice unfurled her wings and used the hot air of the lava crater to lift herself in the air. Nephrite followed Spice with her gaze, the stone-gray scales painted with red-and-gold light, then she grunted and kept climbing.

At the top Spice landed and started looking around on the ground.

'So what are we doing here? what are you looking for?'
For the longer moment Spice didn't answer, her eyes locked with the ground.
Nephrite shifted her weight from left legs to right and back again.

'I don't know' said Spice finally. 'I'll tell you when I see it though.'
Spice lowered her head back to the ground and slowly started to walk using the claws on her wing tips to support herself as she slunk between stones and boulders.
Nephrite shook her head. Spice was most certainly strange, but in the end she seemed determined to find...whatever it was she was looking for. It wasn't her business, accompanying eccentric dragons on strange quest was not in the list of duties of a general assistant. But could she let Spice wander off on her own, especially while she snoops with her head to the ground, oblivious to everything else?

'Spice wait up!' she called towards the Nocturne now sniffing the stones and poking her snout into holes in the ground. 'Wait up, I'm coming.'

One dragon with the snout to the ground, the other with her eyes scanning for danger, the two dragons set out towards the adventure of their lives.
