______Things don’t always turn out the way that they are expected to, and Zirjiru is living, breathing proof of that.
There was meant to be darkness in him, evil that was to whisper through his bones and pump through his once-dead heart. The magus who drew together dark energies to bring him from the slumber of death sought to imbue him with all the cruelty that she could bring to bear, for there was not enough darkness under her control and nothing to carry out her bidding. He’d been a prince, once; now, he would be her prince.
______Miracle closed her eyes and focused. She breathed in Shade. She breathed out magic.
...Things don’t always turn out the way that they are expected...
Perhaps, if his life had not been so twined with hers, he could have returned without her. As it was, Miracle didn’t do near as good a job separating his bones from OoZalu’s as she’d thought, because there was not just one before her, but two - a male, a female. A prince and his consort. Long-dead and now-breathing.
______And not an evil bone in his body.
It’s never really occurred to Zirjiru that he should, perhaps, feel some sort of gratitude towards Miracle for restoring both himself and his lovely partner from the afterlife, but the furious being he’d encountered upon drawing his first breaths did not seem to be the sort who would appreciate thanks, and she hadn’t stuck around long enough to explain anything once she’d realized just how far awry her plans had gone. She’d been gone in a flurry of Shade and flapping wings, leaving behind a pair of very confused, freshly resurrected members of royalty.
They made do. He made do. The rest of the clan was welcoming enough, at least; they didn’t seem at all surprised by his sudden presence, nor his willingness to help. When given the option to not rule, Zirjiru was almost surprised to find that he’d much rather do that and leave the big decision-making to someone else. Playing advisor -- now that he could do! It allowed him to use all the skills he’d learned in anticipation of being Pharaoh without having to deal with any of the pressure that comes with being the morning star and the evening sky.

______Fitting in has been a little hard, especially considering the fact that he’s having some issue adjusting to not being Pharaoh. For all that he’s absolutely thrilled to not be the one in charge, he also was raised knowing that someday he would be the morning star and the prince of all the heavens. On top of that, this new land functions very differently than the sun-soaked sands remembers of his youth. There aren’t many slaves, for one; and they definitely don’t bow and scrape in the presence of their superiors the way they would if he were back home!
______He’s learning, though, and he’s clearly enjoying himself immensely. Not a day goes by when Zirjiru can’t be heard exclaiming in surprise over something that he’s being shown, either by OoZalu or one of the other leaders in the clan. The first time he was shown around Sornieth, he couldn’t stop gushing about how green the Viridian Labyrinth was, how deep the Sea of a Thousand Currents was, and how interesting the rest of it was altogether. The magic his advisors had possessed paled when compared to the sparks that could be produced by Sornieth’s mages, and the menagerie of beasts that populate the wilderness are far more varied than anything he’d ever encountered before!
(Some of the young ones say that if he doesn’t learn to stop speaking in such a ‘snobby’ way, he’s going to get his rump kicked, but he doesn’t believe that speaking eloquently is a reason to get his rump kicked, and besides this manner of speech has served him well for years; why would he change now?)
______For all that he’s out of place in this strange time, he’s striving to learn as much as he can, so as to better perform in his role as Royal Advisor to the clan. There’s intricacies in the social structure of Sornieth that he’s unfamiliar with and that make little to no sense (anyone can partner with any other species? Plaguelings consort with Water dragons? There are no rules, and that is baffling!) but he’s struggling to understand all the same. Even before he’d been resurrected, he’d never been one to give up easily, and his thirst for knowledge is nigh-insatiable. Every day he finds new things to learn, new books to read, new twists and turns in this new place that is so very, very different from everything he’s ever known. This new realm is fascinating. OoZalu doesn’t always seem as enthusiastic as he does, but he accepts her mild amusement without comment.
______None of his innate cheer comes into play when he’s working, however. He’s very good at drawing the line between business and personal, and the Zirjiru who stands on ceremony as Royal Advisor is very different from the Zirjiru who spends his spare time scouring the lands for new materials to read. In court he’s stoic and solemn, listening intently to every problem presented to him before delivering his verdicts. Those who try to ply their friendship with him outside of court will find themselves the subject of much derision, and afterwards will receive a very firm lecture about ‘work’ and ‘play’ and the line that has to be drawn between the two. More than one member of the clan has slunk away beneath Zirjiru’s contemptuous glare after making the mistake of dismissing him due to his cheerful nature.
Thing do not always turn out as expected. When Miracle had carefully arranged his bones in her invocation circle, she’d never expected her spell would go awry. When he’d breathed his last on the banks of the Nile with his lover beside him, he’d never dreamed that the future would hold such wonders - or, really, that he’d have a future at all. And the clan had never expected that one day they would have a true back-from-the-dead prince working as their advisor. Life is full of the unexpected, and Zirjiru honestly couldn’t be happier about it.
