╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮
"Never go home." ╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯ Euria remembers a boy. He had scales like hers and eyes like hers and, she thinks, a heart like hers. She remembers fixing seashells along his scales, and dusting sand off his claws, and watching the sun set with him. Who was he to her? She cannot recall. She can feel the sea salt sticky on her skin and smell the briny ocean and hear the waves lapping at their feet, but she cannot recall who he is. Euria remembers flying over the Viridian Labyrinth with a boy. The trees were green like her eyes and smelled of home like her brother—was that what he was? A brother?—and she felt the call of the wilds. She remembers drawing her claws over the treetops and feeling the dusty roots under her feet as she walked. She remembers yielding herself to the filtered sunlight, letting the rays press patterns on her skin. She was home, but it was a different one. She can still recall leading her brother through the vines into the heart of the forest, seeing the Behemoth again for the first time in years. But she cannot stop herself from aching at these memories. Lastly, Euria remembers the sea. It was blue like her and dark like her. It was dangerous like her. She remembers swimming through the twisting currents with a boy, with a brother, and feeling the gritty sand run through her claws as she touched the deepest part of the trench. She remembers watching the bubbles of the Tidelord as they stretched for the surface and she remembers stopping to look at a green-eyed boy knowing something he did not. And now Euria only knows of the ice. She knows of the cold whipping winds and a boy not unlike her brother with eyes as unyielding as frost. She can think of a time when she would have buried herself deep in the glaciers to be hidden forever, but now she is steely like her home. Here, she only remembers what she must. She remembers where to hide during a storm. She remembers how to make a blanket out of a pelt. She remembers- She remembers a brother growing when she did not. She remembers how to cut at meat and freeze it to dry. She remembers leaving him when he most needed a familiar face. She remembers how to tell when a storm is approaching. She remembers the vines of the Behemoth and seeing them for the last time. She remembers the dark of the Trench, and the dark of her heart. She remembers the pinch of ice on her back, the hurt on her brother’s face and she remembers wanting to wipe away the memories, to fly away. She remembers her father—her father—and his crown of wood and leaves. She remembers her crown that was not her own made of the same wood and leaves. She remembers the dark of her heart and the dark of a throne and she remembers nothing at all. She remembers a time when all was well. |
