Every bit of nature, be it tree or bush, boulder or pebble, has its own guardian.

There are forests and ice floes and deserts with their own protectors, most ancient, some benevolent, and all very dangerous.

So tread carefully in their swamp.

They don't take kindly to strangers, but if you're respectful – remember that most spirits are full of pride and the old ones are especially sensitive – and leave just the right offerings, they may warm up to you.

Their affection will be subtle; edible plants and berries will hang within your reach, and the water you drink will be potable. Dry tinder can be found surprisingly easily, and the swamp’s inhabitants will be less keen on setting their sights on you for dinner.

And if you are especially respectful and aware, they may even take a physical form and let you catch a glimpse. You won't always realise it, but those distant twinkling lights in the mist aren't always sinister.

We forgot the old gods, but they never forgot about us.
