ABOUT

The air felt hot and heavy, the scents almost overwhelming in the stillness. Rich incense filled her nose, along with the odours of food preparation and cooking, stale sweat and excitement warring with fear.
Inari's sage cover obscured her vision and her lanterns barely illuminated the gloom. Instead, she closed her eyes, allowing her other senses to inform her.

There was a low hum of background noise, swelling in volume every now and then, only to fade away again a little while later. This was punctuated by intermittent hums much closer to her location. She suspected there was a pair of coatl, possibly more, conversing just outside the entrance to her tent. She'd never learned to understand their speech and didn't love the oddly pitched sounds they made.

A trickle of sweat ran down her back. Her outfit, traditional though it may have been and soft as the fabric was, was too thick for the current weather, had too many layers to it. But people expected a sage to look like a sage and there was a certain comfort she gained from meeting those expectations. It lent her an air of authenticity right from the outset, the costume rich in small details that built to make an impressive whole.

She took a reluctant sip of her tea, loathing the necessity of drinking a hot beverage on a day when the inside of her tent already resembled furnace levels, but it was the best way to stomach the bitter taste of the roots she used to open her 'extra' senses, the ones that allowed her to access the vast array of information that was generally inaccessible to most of dragonkind and which she interpreted for others to make her prophecies, predictions, and pronouncements.

Other sages only gave advice, spoke words of wisdom, used their years of experience to see beyond the surface of a situation and arrive at the heart of the matter. They were venerated and revered, but rarely feared. Because her talents lay in a different direction, seemed somehow more mystical than those of most other sages, straddled the line of seer territory, most people regarded Inari with varying degrees of fear, although they trusted what she had to say. They just didn't always like what they were told.

Inari took another sip of tea, waiting for the music that would announce the commencement of the evening's festivities. They'd already been here for a week and would stay only a few more days before packing up and moving on, taking their particular brand of entertainment to a new group, a new audience. The travelling had suited her but she was beginning to feel as though it might be time to put down roots, find somewhere permanent to call home. Somewhere that didn't mind having a sage staying with them, with all that implied. She would have to keep her ear to the ground and her senses open.
