A Greek mythological figure, most famous for his eternal punishment in Tartarus. He was made to stand in a pool of water beneath a fruit tree with low branches, with the fruit ever eluding his grasp, and the water always receding before he could take a drink.

Meilinoe traveled to obtain this young dragon herself. It is no secret to the clan that, while she and Loxias share a perfectly cordial working relationship and child-rearing partnership, there is little spark of affection between them. Both of them are duty-bound, especially Meilinoe with her position high in the clan's hierarchy, and both of them are loathe to try and fix something which, as Lightning dragons would say, isn't broken.

Tantalus is the product of a strange and messy relationship himself, not to mention part of the last Shadow clutch born to a clan now aligned with the Plaguebringer. So far he seems to have little of his father's savage intent, tending more toward his mother's general goodwill. Yet Meilinoe chose him for a reason, and she has not been known to make mistakes. If his Shadowborn nature shows anywhere, it is in a certain sense of cunning carefully hidden so as not to appear a threat.

Mei is not threatened. With time, she will teach him to take pride in his dual nature as Shadow-born but Plague-raised. He will become a master of chaos and manipulation; her left hand of darkness. He will learn to see into the deepest shadow, the one from which no light can emerge. He will know the secrets of the darkness, and speak them to none but her.
