J U D G E M E N T
an alchemist of dubious nature.

No one in the lair quite knows where Judge came from. While it is easy to tell he hails from the land of Shadows by the color of his eye, he seems almost too amiable, too kind and open to appear to be capable of any trickery his brethren are known for. He’s always helping with the gathering, and eager to fight alongside comrades in the coliseum. His preoccupation with taming wild familiars as they battle them borders on obsession, and he always brings back a new and rare friend for the hatchlings as a kind gesture.

No one suspects him. No one has any reason to. His murky background may mystify some, but most dragons he comes across have no reason to look any further. He’s an asset, he’s helpful, but more importantly, all that makes him is invisible.

Some dragons paid no attention when Baldwin came into town, having no need for alchemical ingredients. Judge, curious of alchemy and its practical uses, wandered to the stall accompanied by his familiar, a loving Leafy Moth who he had met years before. As his previous customer withdrew a copious amount of silver sludge from the green, bubbling cauldron, Judge was transfixed by its color and apparent value. The mirror gave a nod and smile and said if Judge wanted to see something of that color emerge from the pot, he’d have to toss in something that breathed. When Baldwin’s back was turned, the imperial put his claws around the moth that had been its companion for so long, who had loved and trusted him so much, and shoved it into the brew.

A half hour later, when his claws drew up nothing short of shimmering gold, Judge knew he had found his calling.

The other dragons of the lair don’t know what to make of Judge’s new profession. Every time he goes into the coliseum, he demands his cut of the fights be all of the familiars found. He no longer passes them around to the hatchlings, only giving a smile and saying he’s making a business of selling them to needy dragons for affordable prices. He claims the currency he most often accepts is the strange sludge he keeps in jars lining his walls. There must be hundreds now. Mostly copper, some silver, a few prized golds. They’re all accompanied with labels, affectionate names only he knew the meaning of.

These days, he’s always plodding along with a familiar behind him, looking uncertain, because the others in the lair tell him that Judge never seems to keep the same one longer than a week.
