ETERA
The Illusionist

“Do not always believe your eyes. They are easier to trick than you may imagine.”
A showman to his core, Etera spent his formative years and adolescence traveling with his parents and their troupe from territory to territory. He picked up illusionism in his mid-teens from a temporary guest of his parents. While his family was not originally pleased to have their son playing around with the magical arts–having seen one too many instances where things ended poorly for all involved–his dedication to refining and honing the parlor tricks he had been taught swayed them.

He met his mate-to-be during a show in the Ashfall Waste. Immediately enamored by Anwen's beauty and intelligence, he spent three months futilely attempting to woo her with tricks and gifts and extravagant words. He was moderately successful in the end; amused and touched by his antics, Anwen began a correspondence with him while he travelled and the two exchanged missives for another year before the passing of Etera's mother and dissolution of the troupe drove him back to the Ashfall Waste.

He continued to work there, visiting Anwen and falling even more in love with her, until her father, a respected banker and financier, sent his daughter to the City of Dusk at the behest of Hilbraunt, an old family friend. Etera immediately agreed to accompany her and they made their way to the City. His moderate skill with illusions and other flashy spells convinced Astrantia, who was still desperate to fill the Tower Complex with knowledgeable bodies, to offer him a position there while his fiancee Anwen worked with Hilbraunt.

Though showy and grandiose, Etera is genuinely goodhearted and can be surprisingly serious when it's called for. He's optimistic and cheerful and, if one can look past the braggadocio and fanfare, very kind and generous.
