Who laid the egg that hatched him is unknown. How the egg survived against the untamed winds and wild heat and the feral beasts eager for their next meal remains a mystery. And yet he lived. He found a place which offered shelter and protection, the kind that could only ever be found in dreams. Dreams. Strange dreams, always. They spoke to him in whispers and he listened, eager and attentive. He heard every word and he understood every whisper. He could touch it, shape it like clay, change it as he saw fit. It was his to tame, his to play with. A toy, in those early days, that he put to use frequently. With origins unknown, Vidvas was nothing more than an orphaned egg adopted into a nearby Arcane clan. And as the clan leader dreamt of him, he hatched from his egg and became one of them: Arcane. To them, he was survivor, a miracle of life that managed to make it best the unkind wilds of the Starfall Isles. To them, he was something different. He was a dragon, this was to be sure, but he was also not. Vidvas was a Seeker. Seeker of dreams, a being of both worlds and yet belonging to neither. He had an affinity to dreams that grew faster than he did, even if it’s exact nature remained hidden. What had started as a game became a duty, a service he provided for his clan. They had given him kindness and hospitality and he would, in turn, do this for them. His talents now go towards weaving dreams for his clanmates, helping them see what the future holds for them or creating simple charms of protection. This he does for them without complaint and does it time and time again, but with a cost. These charms, his charms, siphon life out of him like a leech. The real world is a gift and, by molding with the dreams, he loosens his grasp on the Real bit by bit. But then there are the blessings. Drawing a Dream is different to Vidvas, asking nothing of him. No amount of his life is needed and, on the occasions that he and the Dream’s wills are in harmony, he might even be gifted with some more life to replace that which was stolen away. And then there are the Nightmares. Drawing a Nightmare requires a finess. Vidvas must be ready for them. He must be prepared to fight them, for losing means a loss of consciousness and a loss of precious time for days at a time. These battles alone cost him something dear: his eyesight. And still he fights on. But what is lost is lost. He will not mourn and he will not yield to the Nightmares. He is Awakened, he is Dreaming. He is nothing, and yet…he is everything. |
