Biography

- has a constant homesickness, bolstered by her idolizing how simple her life used to be
- yes her parents used to murder people while she was in the other room but STILL
- the murder thing 100% did not affect her psych at all, no sir

- has this hate-hate relationship with her ship
-

- the helleborous is far lighter than the heavily-armed ships that held the light blockade (like the galanthus)
- she was meant to run down laden spicerunners returning from the labyrinth
- speed over strength, lightly armed as to not weigh her down
- she can outrun near any other ship put to water, and it was only a matter of working around how lightly armed she was to overtake them

peirene couldn't return to the wood, after the war

during the war, she was among the first to cast off the mooring ropes, pushing the helleborous off to sea and away from the fleeing citizens and frenzied imperials that spilled from the caverns. they took to the wing, even as the distance between ship and shore grew, to mount the safety of her deck

fran calling across the waves, pulling the fortitude close to tell peirene that they must return to the lair, to help anyone left to help.

the warship turning made the rest of the longships turn with her - if the great helleborous wouldn't face the open outer seas, then what chance would they have?

the approach was laborous in grief. the docks and scrimshaw, already half-empty from the loss of the lonicera and galanthus and rosebriar and blackthorn, in tatters, the mudbricks of houses c

the inside was worse

up the stone stairs and into the sea-caves, greeted by the trailed ruins of the stables, a battlefield of splintered wood, tufts of fur and feathers dancing in their wakes, and every color of blood, not even dried,

past the refectory, half-way through the drowned catacombs, the ceiling had caved in so throughly that the necropolis was completely blocked. entire shadowcedar trees had fallen into the hole, the air sickly with their sap, the massives logs half-snapped by the collapse and the subsequent weight of the emperor and deity atop them.

above, the air was black as night with ash and smoke. the wood still burned, and it would for a week longer, with the firs and peat so flammable and the windsinger stirring his winds to keep it kicked up.

for days, it's more about pulling dragons from their apartments, the slow trickle of dragons walking back in from the wasteland, unblocking the dirt over the sewers and back caves to free trapped dragons

there are other dragons that come in, survivors from clans that had been trampled by the warring gods. warlord tribes, out-of-flight dragons, even those from clans they had been allied to.

nobody can sleep out in schrimshaw, and they pile into the habitable parts of the caverns instead. two families sleep in her apartment on captain's row, while she retreats to her cabin aboard the helleborous.

not once has she stepped foot in the wood since.

the shadowstair road, through the ceiling of the drowned catacombs, provided open access into the wood, as virulent's charter gave it claim over a good chunk of the old shadowlands. she could go home whenever she wanted, but it wasn't home anymore, and it wouldn't be again.

she can't stomach it, she needs the wood how it was in her youth, the eternal-dark skies and trapestries of moss. when they sail along the northern coast of the wood, and see only the growing cities of the fire and light clans, the sky a dawn-pale as the lightweaver burns off the shadowbinder. she can't bring herself any closer than that.

Peirene missed the rivers of the Drag.

She remembered her childhood fondly, those long dark days aboard the Hen. She remembered her mother singing as she poled their ferry away from shapes in the depths, her father bargaining with customers in his soft voice, and them both teaching her the way of the waters.

The Hen was small, compared to the ships Peirene had met later in life, but as a child, it never seemed anything but cozy. She was just large enough for a pair of cabins, one for the family, one for the passengers, and a hold just large enough to carry their food. The perfect size.

They only sailed on the dark waterways of the Drag, where the curtains of moss would alway yield before their prow, and the Shadowbinder would never lead them astray. The water was always warm, and the sweet scent of herbs, pine, and peat was always in the air.

On lazy, idyllic days, you could trail your hand into the water, and it would grasp you back with the loosest of fingers. Their Lady favored those aboard the Hen, her mother would tell her.

She loved her ship, the Woods, and her parents.

Her mother was the captain of the ferry, and her father served every other position aboard. Peirene knew that he would only take up the pole himself on rare occasions, and instead preferred the more menial task of keeping their home in service. She would help him, on occasion, though favored the pole herself.

She remembers helping him tie sweet-smelling herbs with twine and hang them throughout the cabins and hold for good luck. She remembers following him ashore to fill their water barrels with good water. She remembers curling up beside him in their cabin when the waters were choppy, and him telling her stories to pass the time. She missed him terribly.

Her mother showed her love in a different way.

She would stand beside Peirene and help her with the pole, feather-light in her fingers, the great length of wood weighing nothing to her, like a warrior with their sword. She would help her push away the dangers the dark water held. A log like that could have torn a hole in the hold, she would tell her. She would teach her how to sing the old way as they went, with her low voice, lovely enough to make her eyes go sleepy.

Other times, when a customer came aboard, so polite and unassuming, her mother would tell her later what they were really doing. Their bags were filled with poached opal cobra eggs, or they were scouting out routes to smuggle dragons from the Woods.

The kindest thing her mother would do for her was the worst. She would ask her, “Peirene, could you please go and fetch me my atlas?”

Her mother knew the waterways better than any cartographer. She was sending her away to protect her.

Instead, she would go to the cabin and crawl into their bed, pressing her hands and pillows to her ears. Pretend to not hear the yelling, the sound of bodies falling overboard and striking the water, then spark of her father’s magic.

She would stay in the cabin until one of them came and got her. She could always smell the burning hair when they opened the door, and the burnt meat when she pressed her face into their clothes.

This happened once, twice, a score of times.

Soon, she was too old to be aboard the Hen. She should go and spread her wings, find another boat, another crew. Find a mate and build her own ferry.

She said goodbye to her parents at Vogelzang’s port.

- - -

With the help of Vogelzang’s ambassadors, she was sent away to one of their allies.

Clan Virulent, a displaced plague clan, hiding in the Wispwillow Grove, agreed to take her in. She was entirely unaware of the perilous state they were in, and what would have happened to her if their Chieftain hadn’t died a fortnight after her arrival.

She survived the mutiny’s fires, and followed Ives willingly from the Wood’s northern shores, and into the depths of the Wasteland.

It was years before she saw a ship again.

Instead of a pole, she took up a spear. Her elegant hands traded their rope callouses for a warrior’s. She fought and killed, and called herself a raider.

Underneath the cliff of Dragonhome, she fell into anonymity. Her upbringing didn’t matter, nor did her parents as soon as it was established that they weren’t of noble birth. Lady Cosette tried to befriend her, but Peirene had lived in Vogelzang for less than a moon, and knew nothing of what she spoke of.

She was just another raider. She fought and drank and tried to remember her mother’s face, her father’s voice.

Then, suddenly, Ives was brought down.

She was yanked from obscurity, as the newly resurrected Lord Chieftain branded dragons for his own. She took the mark on her neck, where her collarbones met, and answered his questions about her origins honestly. His advisors noted her childhood aboard a boat.

He remembered her. He meant to marry her to Ives, but his death stopped his plans. No matter, it wasn’t meant to be. How would she like to be apart of his guard? She looked capable enough.

The weeks that followed were a blur. The knowledge of her possible fate was strange enough, but so was her inclusion on councils of skilled warriors. She sat besides dragons who held command in the Dominance Wars, or had the blood of kings and queens.

It was because of her skill with ships. She grew up on one, didn’t she? She and Grieras and Sevraine shared that fact, and they deserved to be on the council because of it.

When the Lord Chieftain said that they would travel to the Ruins, and attend the Lightweaver’s Court, she went along with them. They traveled there on a war galley.

She had missed the water so much it hurt. The sea underneath was salty and choppy, but she swore could almost hear her mother singing, over the water from miles away.

They went to Court, and the lightbrand on her neck itched and scratched as she took the Lightweaver’s blessings and titles, and became a Captain.

The warship Helleborous was given to her. She had gotten her own ship at last.

---

The Helleborous was a proud, elegant warship, made of the finest shadowcedar the Wood had to offer, and fresh from the shipyards. She was the fastest of the Sunrot navy from the first, admired by light courtiers and envied by other captains.

She was not the Hen.
