The hot night air washed over him, even through the dense foliage and the all encompassing mist of the murky wood. Shade stood amongst the rotted logs and glowing fungi on the bank of a river delta in the driftwood drag. He understood that it was the realm of the ancient Shadowbinder in which he now felt the comforting embrace of the evergreens and the darkness, which called to him as he imagined a mother would her son to come home.

With a low rumble, the guardian allowed his eyes to rove over the entire landscape. He had seen it all now, had come to the conclusion of several days of surveillance- and had reached the final step of his months long search. He had not known then what it was that he was looking for; only that the rolling plains and mystical glimmer of the Starfall Isles had brought him a certain peace, but not quite comfort. The smoke and the heat of the Ashfall Waste had brought him comfort, but did not beckon to his heart. The Viridian Labyrinth, abundant with life, spoke to his heart- but something had yet been missing.

Now, the Tangled Wood called to a part of Shade that he could not articulate. He simply found that he would be content to stand amidst the soft light cast by the firebugs and the luminescent shrooms, ensconced in the mist and in the safety of the shadows, indefinitely. Hidden was he now from the specters of his past, which reached in vain to grasp him in the clutches and drag him back to the blood-red cave, to the howls and screams, to a night three long seasons ago that at last he felt he might begin to forget. Such a relief was this that a revelation came upon him: never in that old life had he understood the plight of a parent, and the rewards of fatherhood. But here, perhaps, in this shrouded wood, he could learn.

And so Shade raised his eyes to the moon, which was blinded to his presence by the warm shadows of his new home. In silent prayer, he pledged his allegiance to the Shadow mother and resolved to create a clan that would stand strongly in unity, thriving in the darkness as only a soul who is well loved can stand, never long alone.

Next: the clan in its early days; then: becoming a wildclaw; and then the clan beginning to thrive; then the clan in his glory days; then his retirement as patriarch and the naming of his successor, Elezian; and finally, how the clan continues to prosper, include tales of glory & also rumors and intrigues... explain how the society developed and how the current social system came to be.
