Having been hatched in the Sunbeam Ruins, Schatten always felt a bit out of place. Schatten was intrigued by the dark and dark magicks, not to mention that her very name's meaning, shadow, was the complete opposite of her element. Her parents ridiculed her interests, often calling her a disgrace of a light dragon. Pushing their and her other clan mates' judgments aside, she simply did whatever she desired and shrugged off other dragons' opinions. It was her life and she would live it the way she wanted to.

Of course, in her clan, it was rather difficult to pursue knowledge of dark magicks so she left to find an instructor in another flight. Traveling to the Tangled Wood, she found a necromancer who was willing to teach her the art. Spending a while with the dragon, she learned everything she could as best as she could. Her instructor was extremely pleased with the interest she had in the art as well as her naturally gifted abilities.

Once she completed her training, Schatten bid her teacher farewell to find a clan of her own where she could expand her knowledge on her own. Deciding that the Southern Icefield might be interesting, she headed south.

Upon her arrival, she landed on the edge of a random clan's territory. On patrol was a female nocturne and a female mirror, both training their attention on Schatten for her strange arrival. Cautiously approaching her, the nocturne questioned why the skydancer was at the edge of their border. Explaining that she was looking for a clan to join, Schatten told them of her travels. Nodding, the mirror extended an invitation for Schatten to stay with her clan, Storm clan. Grateful, she accepted the invitation.

After a while, Schatten eventually fell into clan life, finding her own place within the clan. She used her time to perfect her training and practice and perform rituals. It was one day, when she was using a new ritual she found, that the result changed her life.

Smoke filled the den, the ground rumbled, black and white dust coated nearly everything. Coughing, Schatten fanned her wings in an attempt to clear out the smoke. Once the air within the den was cleared, her eyes went wide at the sight before her. A graceful black and green female tundra levitated slightly off the ground, face in a scowl. "Why have I been brought back to this world? I tried so hard to escape it. Is there truly no escape for me?" The tundra complained.

Awestruck, it took Schatten a moment before she could speak. "Forgive me, spirit. I was only experimenting with a new ritual I discovered. Never did I expect for something like this to happen." Focusing her glowing eyes on the skydancer, the tundra's annoyance lightened. "Skydancer, what tempts you to follow this path?" Giving her a smile, she responded. "Death and magick are both so interesting. Why not combined the two? But again I didn't expect to summon a full on spirit. I thought that the limit of necromancy was a temporary summoning of a faint ghost."

Shaking her head, the tundra slid her gaze to the side. "It depends on the way the dragon dies and the ritual or spell you use. Both are fairly important in summoning spirits." Confused, Schatten asked her. "The manner of death? Why is that important?" Sighing deeply, the tundra fully turned away, walking to the back of the cave. "If a spirit dies in a way where they can not find rest, they may be summoned back to the realm of the living. Having closure before death is incredibly important." Nodding understandably, Schatten begins to question the tundra, who she later learned was named Cipher. The questioning was slow at first but slowly Cipher grew more comfortable with answering. Due to having no limit of how long she could inhabit the living world, the pair spent a lot of time together, talking. Though, Cipher was uncomfortable revealing herself to the rest of the clan for a while, but eventually she did.

After a while, the two had grown close and romance had developed between them. Though, it was strange considering the tundra was a lifetime older and dead where Schatten was only a few years of age, they became mates.
