Biography

Avni slides you a drink from across the bar and thinks about your question for a moment.
“Where do I come from?” she ponders briefly, “that's a hard question,”
She washes a glass absent-mindedly as she searches the vast file cabinet that is her brain to try and pick a place to begin. She decides to begin with the moment she first left home, brimming with excitement to finally get a chance to see the new world, her backpack full of books and essentials and medicine that her parents insisted she take with her. It was so long ago now, she doesn't even remember what her old home looked like as she walked away from it, and the faces of her smiling parents are nothing but a blur to her now, but she still remembered the painful knot in her stomach of having to leave it all behind.
She wandered for days, somehow finding herself in a desert area, the sand beneath her feet scorching hot. Everything around her had began to look the same and it was hard for her to tell if she was walking in circles or not. Soon her resources began to deplete, her water bottle started to get lighter and lighter and over the course of a few days the heat made her so tired she wondered if she was going to meet her end amongst the grains of sand.
She lay down, waiting for sleep, when she suddenly heard the flapping of wings above her. She looked up to see a Flesh Forager, circling her, perhaps waiting for it's next meal and she inwardly defied it, pushing herself up and forcing herself to carry on. The forager continued to follow closely behind her, like death himself waiting for the very moment she would fall, but Avni pressed on stubbornly as she was not about to let herself become bird food.

Several painstaking hours passed before she finally spotted the outskirts of a town in the distance. She felt a huge weight lift off of her, and the sudden realisation of how hungry and thirsty she was replaced it. She felt unwell and severely tired, and the forager still followed.
Avni continued to drag herself forward, until she was finally at the edge of the town where she collapsed onto the dirt path from exhaustion.

She woke up in a large bed in a dimly lit room yet her eyes still burned adjusting to her surroundings. She felt hydrated, but she was still starving and her stomach stabbed her with an unimaginable hunger she had never felt before in her entire life. Avni tried to stand, but all four of her legs collapsed under her when she tried to leave the bed and she grunted in pain. It was hard to walk.
She heard footsteps above her and a door opened, filling the room with a blinding light that came from the small doorway. A Fae, with a familiar looking bird on their shoulder entered the room from upstairs and greeted her.
“You've been asleep for a while. You're lucky my familiar pal here found you when he did!” they said. Avni blinked, confused at the bird who looked at her with innocent eyes. She had severely misjudged the familiar, and thanked them both for helping her.

She was given a place to stay in what she later learned was a bar, and was fed back to health within the week.
Avni was grateful for everything the two strangers did for her, but began to feel like a burden and insisted that she work at the bar to repay her debt, which her Fae friend was more than happy for her to do. Avni found herself feeling nicely settled down at her new home, and she had every opportunity to explore and learn about the area on her days off, where she spoke with the other townspeople, read books at the library and wandered off to the edge of town where she could buy stuff at the marketplace.

A few years passed.

She was wiping down the bar one evening when her Fae friend approached her with a solemn look on their face.
“Are you okay?” Avni asked, worried.
The Fae nodded, and placed a small hand on hers.
“I have to go away, to fight...I'm going to entrust the bar to you while I'm away. I can't take my familiar with me either...Could you look after him for me?”
Avni begged their friend to stay for the longest time, worried for their safety, but finally agreed when they explained that this was something they wanted to do, and couldn't turn back.
They left her that night, alone in the bar, wondering when they would return. The friend that had helped her so much, and the familiar that had saved her life. They were all she had grown to know.

Avni, now back in the present, put down the glass she was cleaning and was greeted by the familiar she described in her story, a large feathered creature perching itself on her shoulder and nuzzling the side of her face.

“How long ago was that?” you ask.
“A long time ago now,” Avni explains, “But I'll wait as long as I can,”
