Amaryllis - Derived from Greek αμαρυσσω (amarysso) "to sparkle". This was the name of a heroine in Virgil's epic poem 'Eclogues'. The amaryllis flower is named for her. Born from the seed of an elder oak, grown in fields of summer wheat, bathed in the cool waters of star, leavened by the shades of leaves. Pale eyes gazing, always staring, illuminated by only themselves. A small owlet rests on her wing of branch, another fluttering, landing alongside, watching with large, round eyes. As she steps the grass bows, the bramble bends, boughs turn away. Her nape rattles, strung with beads of bone, strung with the feathers of fallen. Her breath hazes from nostrils, fading through the canopy above. Her mouth unmoving, she speaks, her voice like song, "Follow me. I will lead you away." She turns, the growth succumb to her as she moves. Leaves on a breeze float around her. She pays them no heed. Her wings quiver, the owlets cower to her bough. Her legs bend, her hips sway, her shoulders stay taught. Bending her head, she pauses. "I will not wait," she says. Untrue to her words, she stays. Above, the leaves spin, though the air stills. Minutes pass and her patience is gone. Her wings thrash, her branches bowing, the owlets whisking away. The trees bend in anguish, turning away from her, away from anger. The grass flails and the leaves spin. Her wings slow. Suddenly it seems as if nothing changed. The trees straighten, the grass still. She walks again, her legs bending, her hips swaying, her shoulders staying taught. Her pale eyes glow ahead. She steps in the shadow, fading from sight. |
