the high alchemists' greatest creation

Log book of the High Alchemist; Year [redacted], 23 suns until Tidelord's festival.

Patrol brought in another young slime-spitter today. Specimen is female, no more than 5 suns old. Abandoned on the edge of the clan's territory for reasons unknown. Saved it from the long grueling trek to the Mother, as that was the fate the patrol wanted for it when they brought it back. After seeing how large and devoid of perfection the specimen's pearl was, I've decided it will be sufficient to test my newest theory on.

Clan is under the impression that the new addition is my apprentice. How hilarious, but I'm almost insulted. Like I'd ever bother trying to teach a goo-brained scum anything except to teach them to worship Lightweaver's true children.
But anyway. Since Imperials are so closely bound to the Lightweaver Himself, as we are Him and He is us, I hypothesized that there is a stronger magical connection between Pearlcatcher's and their pearls than most wyrms realize. Just as Imperials are one of the only threats against other Imperials, perhaps the greatest weakness to Pearlcatchers comes from within them. I have dabbled in the use of pearl dust but only with the pisspoor specimens I've been able to capture in the past. But this specimen, which I've dubbed Cal, is one of the best I've seen. I confiscated its pearl and immediately after acquiring it, ground the pearl into a fine dust while Cal watched. Cal observing is very important, as the emotional shock of losing its pearl should prompt its fluid-producing glands to fill up with more pearly liquid. I gave the specimen a small rock and told it to pearlize it, which it did out of instinct. I hardly knew what to do with all this pearl dust of the finest, purest quality possibly in all of Sornieth. Pass it to the right Ridgeback and I would never be in need of treasure ever again. But, I would miss out on testing its magical properties. I need time to ponder this. I will update the log when I decide.

I came to my decision three days ago, but haven't had time to update the log. Three days ago Cal attempted to escape. This gave me my first opportunity to test the powers of the pearl dust. I labored under moonlight, crafting chains and cuffs and bracelets, beautiful but casual enough to be passed off as jewelry if anyone came looking. But make no mistake, these are shackles. One of my hypothesis is right, a Pearlcatcher will not ever harm its pearl even if the pearl itself has changed form, and Cal does not lift a claw against its bindings. I added a bit of a personal touch though, the mark of the High Alchemist on the pendant and bracelets. Like branding livestock. Need to make sure no rivals can steal my little oyster away.

Broke apart the specimen's second pearl today as I was running low on dust. I've been feeding the powder back to the specimen by mixing it into its rations. The result is very interesting, it seems that ingesting the pearl dust causes Cal's glands to produce more of the black tar. So much of it that it pours out of its mouth, which I collect after it solidifies. I would love to do a biopsy, just to see exactly what the interaction between the ingested dust and the glands is, but I am just too concerned about the possibility of destroying what could be the magnum opus of my scientific endeavors.

For the past several days, a peculiar shine has gathered on the specimen's scales. A pearly, opalescent sheen over the dorsal side of the specimen. Specimen has lost some mobility as the scales are bonding together. I have tried scraping and chiseling it off, but it grows back within hours. More alarming is how the specimen no longer reacts to seeing its pearls destroyed. I should have expected it to become desensitized at some point. Doesn't matter, I still have quite a stock of pearl dust and even a few fully-formed pearls. I've handed a few under the table to a certain pale coatl, who gave me quite the haul of exotic ingredients in exchange. Didn't ask what they planned to use the dust for, and frankly I don't care to know. But I do have an idea on how to fix our pearl situation. Will update the log with the results.
