a tough cookie

Baroque was just a young boy when his parents sent him off into the wilderness without any adults. This, however, wasn't unusual where he is from, as his homeland is part of a tribal community, in which they believe one can only become an adult worth feeding if they can survive the harsh woods right before they come of age. Baroque was a smaller dragon than most and even with all the prepping his mother Koujaku gave him, he still didn't feel ready.
He still remembers the day he was sent off, his fellow tribal members forming an enclosing, almost suffocating tunnel around him.
He made it through to the other side, relieved he can finally breathe again and then it hit him. He was completely alone. He looked back and he couldn't even make out a faint light of civilization. Taking a deep breath in, he marched onward into the forest, ready to spend the two days surviving. His first day was uneventful, he munched on a few berries and whatever he could quickly catch. Stumbling around, he came upon a fast-moving stream and almost fell in trying to get a drink. Baroque recovered successfully, thankfully, or this story might've gone a bit different, or it could've not been able to make it to your eyes and ears at all. The second day was much harder. It was time to start moving closer to his home, so he headed in the direction he was sure he came in before. It was reaching close to evening and he still hadn't made his way back. He was confused, but assured himself he could've just made one wrong turn and he'll figure it out. Baroque assumed this mistake was due to his sleepiness, as the night sleeping alone was difficult for him. He didn't realize sleeping alone would be the hardest part of this journey.
So, Baroque settles down, his eyes quickly closing and his consciousness quickly slipping. Within moments, he was completely out.
He awoke to the freezing air. He stretched a bit before opening his eyes and bringing his head up higher. Snow littered the ground around him, and as he stared out into this open abyss of snowflakes, one hit him dab on the nose. Startled, he moved back and hit a tree. Baroque knew he was immediately in the wrong area, as he had only seen snow once of his days a young hatchling. Yelping, he scrambles past everything, not paying attention to where he's going. He passes fallen trees and snowed-in burrows to find smooth, shining ice. Water had frozen over here, and he was about to continue moving past it to when he remembered his mother scolding him for attempting to crawl onto the ice back at home. This was his one chance.
Shrugging, he jumped onto the ice and was sprawling all about wildly. Skating this way and that, the cold air ruffling up his feathers, it was the day of a lifetime.
That is, until a crack appeared. And another. And another.
Baroque didn't realize this, however, and continued to slide across. He reached a wintery island and paused to look up at its mass size. Once the initial shock of his discovery subdued, he turned around to go back and the ice was broken. Shards of lethally freezing water shone about the path to his homeland, making it near impossible to make it back safely. Sighing, Baroque turned back towards
