Nature: Quiet and calm. He can offer some comforting words, but other than that seems a little more detached than others.

Rubeus

He was never welcome.

He was never a proper Arcanic- he could never read his spells right. He couldn’t catch the prey like the other hatchlings, nor could he write or read like them. As his parents said often, he was mentally stunted- his brothers, his sisters, why couldn’t he be like him? they asked. He tried, oh, he tried. But, was it ever good enough for his parents’ steadily growing expectations?

No.

He found his pleasure in death.
Whether it be the mutilation in hunting, or colosseum battles, he loved the blood. He liked to make the dragons squeal- he wanted to turn their stomachs. If none of them wanted him, he’d make them sure that he was unwanted.

By the time he reached five, he killed his entire family.

Rubeus fled to the outskirts of the Scarred Wasteland, shortly after joining a band of mafia- themed scavengers and bounty hunters. Headed by the mysterious dragon T, Rubeus found his work in killing other dragons… and making sure no evidence was left behind.

He killed so many that he lost count.

With so many techniques under his skin, he could merely flick a claw at death itself. Other mafia- dragons feared him. They worked for him, bowed to him like sniveling dragonets. In his conquest for power, blood pooled at his claws to bathe him in glory.

Then they attacked.

He was on an assassination mission in the festering heart of the Wasteland when the dragons dropped from the sky- midnight black, dressed in thin robes and armed with hatchets. They dragged him to Reedcleft Ascent, where they snapped both of his wings and left him for dead.

There he spent weeks, without food or water, starving to death in a cold, unfamiliar territory. It was ironic, really, he told himself- the hunter was now the hunted. He didn’t know who had wanted to kill him- but then, why would he need to know? He was going to die anyway.
He spat in Death’s eye once, and death had speared him through the heart. What use was an illiterate, magic- useless Arcanic with no wings?

Dragons from a neighboring clan in the region, Amare and Bane, found the dying Imperial not too far from their clan residence. They took him from the cliffs, taking him back to their lair- and their herbal healer, Incarnadine.
She was an Imperial, much like him- she made small talk now and then, but the injured dragon refused to speak to any dragon of the lair. He was much too hurt for that- moreso his pride than his body, however.

Though Incarnadine tried her hardest, she couldn’t manage to fix his wings- Rubeus was grounded for life. Ha. A dragon without his wings, he told himself. What good is an already useless dragon without wings?
He spent multiple years in the lair known as Glacies Ventus, watching dragons come and go. He didn’t speak to anyone- not even his only friend, Incarnadine. Despite every hint he wished to be left alone, the Imperial never left his side- she was bringing him his meals day by day, telling him stories of her childhood to lull him to sleep. Unfortunately, and he had to admit, it did help quite a bit to have such an understanding dragon in the lair. Most just ignored him or looked at him in fear.

One night, during an early winter snow, he stepped outside the lair, stretching his weak, tattered wings to the moonlight.
It was like a feeling he’d never experience again- the breeze under his wings, rushing by his face as he started in for the kill. Wind whistling in his ears as the unsuspecting victim let off a muffled scream of agony.
He had been startled by Incarnadine, who had come up silently behind him.
They exchanged stories and conversation- and though his voice was cracked and rough from years of silence, he laughed like no other time in his wretched life before.

The couple found themselves having the ‘excursions’ more often, and eventually it was revealed that Incarnadine was going to lay two of his eggs.
His firstborns, two daughters, were as loving as could be- though in a rather familiar sort of way, Illness, one daughter, was found dead in the very spot he and his mate had met. Though they mourned for their loss, they decided it was safer if their remaining daughter, Contagion, was sent to another clan in the Windswept Plateau.

In his pastime, Rubeus would meet with the clan librarian, Petram, for the Tundra to teach him to read and write. He put his bloody talons to use in words- perhaps staining them with ink rather than blood would be better.

His life was happy, for a short while. Years passed, and while he rarely talked to other dragons, Incarnadine kept him happy and content.

While reminiscing one day, a midnight- black Imperial came from the trees surrounding the landing. When Rubeus had asked who he was, he simply got a laugh- the dragon, who had the likeness of a cat, introduced himself as Thanatos.

After quickly learning that this was his former boss T, two more residents of the lair showed up- in an unfortunate turn of events, the Imperial dragon attacked and removed one of the limbs from the clan leader, Renaissance. While Adventure the Travelmaster attempted to stop Thanatos, the dragon was quickly shot down.
Using the lay of the land, however, Rubeus was able to scout out a path to take the Imperial enemy down and save what was left of his clan leader.

Seen as a hero to Glacies Ventus, Renaissance quickly receded to Elder in the clan to promote Rubeus to his successor. The Imperial took the role on gratefully, and continues to serve his clan to this day.

He and Incarnadine have continued to hatch eggs, and former assassin Thanatos is being reformed in the clan.
