"The spirits murmured a promise of power..."


He raised a dark purple paw, spreading clawed fingers to allow the insubstantial creatures to flow through and around. Shutting bright red eyes, he reached out with his mind, whispering incantations under his breath until he could see the spirits in his minds eye.
They wreathed and danced around him, some getting dangerously close to his pearl. When he swatted them away from it the spirits murmured a promise of power, of magic beyond any dragon's capability, if only they were allowed to touch his pearl.
"I'm trying to concentrate," he growled out loud, eyelids twitching, "Won't you be quiet?"
Unbidden, the spirits coalesced, their shimmering 'bodies' changing colours like a chameleons to show what they wished - an image of the stargazer with magical energy pouring from his paws and pearl, wings spread wide and almost crackling with it. "It could be you," they whispered, "It could be true."
"Show me what I want." was his irritated response. Despite disappointed sighs that sounded like breaths of wind, they changed again to aid his work, as they always had done, whether it be mapping the stars or seeking new planets.
He set himself to work, pushing down the unease in the back of his mind that always jumped up when they tried to coax him with power. They were tricksters, sure, but just trying to help, just like they always had.. right?
