If you can dream it, you can do it. This is something that was once said by a man who drew mice for a living, but still, Thumbelina very badly wants to believe it. What Thumbelina wants to do is to fly, and she spends lots and lots of time dreaming about it.

The art to flying, says her best friend, is to throw yourself at the ground and miss.

Thumbelina suspects that this is also a quote from somewhere, but really, she does not want to throw herself at the ground. She wants to throw herself at the sky, and she only wishes that the sky would open her arms and let her in.

Every day, Thumbelina spends hours studying the birds. How do they do it? There are tiny ones like the hummingbirds who are small and light and whose wings beat frantically keeping them aloft. There are the large bulky ones like the swans who have ridiculously long necks and yet with a powerful stroke or two of their wings, up into the air they go.

The goldfinches see her watching them and flutter over to land on her head. The sparrows bring her dandelion fluff in consolation, but it is her friend who brings her an aviator's helmet and starts building her a hang glider.
