"The air is much clearer up here."

The mottled Imperial coiled around an ancient redwood, scratching her chin with a single claw as she surveyed the roughly-drawn map spread out before her. "This can't be right," she muttered. "If that's the river, and that's north, then I should be close enough to see the Crescendo." As if to punctuate her point, she made a show of looking in every direction - including up. "Sunny skies, no storms in sight," she said. "These are the bloody Shrieking Wilds, or I'm a podid's dusty aunt." Dropping to the leaf-strewn path below her, Vesper set off in search of civilization. And she was not disappointed. When the trees thinned and the meadows came into view, the old Imperial nearly stumbled back a step. She hadn't expected this lushness in the Wilds. A waterfall crashed into a wide, rock-rimmed basin, and a snowy Tundra watched with an indulgent smile as hatchlings frolicked in the shallows. Something brushed her hind leg, and Vesper nearly leaped into the air. She spun, finding herself face-to-face with a gem-studded Mirror whose face was hidden behind a headdress fashioned from a bird skull. "Peace, traveler." The Mirror's voice was guarded, though not unkind. "If it's the Plateaus you're looking for, you've gone much too far north." Vesper frowned. "How did you know that's where I'm headed?" "I've been watching you since you first landed in our territory," the Mirror replied. "So long as you mean us no harm, we'll be glad to set you on the right course." The Imperial never made it to her destination. She knew, the moment the smell of lavender and fertile earth struck her, that she was home. |
