To most dragons, it would be entirely impossible to know what role Veles fulfills. To the naked eye, he seems to be something of a leech, draining the resources of the Order of the Colossus without offering a single thing in return despite his apparent good health and keen mind. But the Order knows better, and respects him quite highly for his efforts, since Veles is a rare soulwarden, tasked with guiding the dead safely into the beyond. It's not a job for the faint of heart. What few records exist of soulwardens are often haunting, even gruesome, since the spirits in need of the most guidance are often the ones who have died terrible deaths or done horrific things. It's not unusual for soulwardens to confront bloody histories, and it's not unusual for them to fail in putting such histories to rest. Shepherding unruly spirits takes a great deal of energy and dedication, and those with the gift for it must decide quickly if they want to nourish their talents or let their magic fade. Clearly, Veles has chosen to embrace his role, and since the Scarred Wasteland is a place of survival, the dead frequently cling to life despite the natural order of things. It was like that even when he was young, the son of two proud Plague progenitors who intended for Veles to succeed them one day. He rejected leadership as soon as he realized he was tied to the land's ghosts, as soon as he knew he was one of the only few who could help. For a time, he traveled the Plaguebringer's domain, a soulwarden for hire, chasing away the restless spirits that troubled clans so insistently, but it was the Order of the Colossus that finally offered him a permanent position, though they would not say why. Personally, Veles still suspects it is because of Cybiac's questionable practices, but with steady pay and a great deal of freedom, he doesn't press the issue. He's just there to put the dead to rest, not to interrogate the practices of the living. Keeping Veles as the resident soulwarden has seen the number of hauntings drop in great numbers. The only downside, as the Order is beginning to find, is that Veles does not act solely out of the goodness of his heart, and his uncommon abilities have left him with an inflated ego. There is no question that he will do the right thing where spirits are concerned; he would never intentionally let a spirit run rampant when he could herd it safely to the afterlife. But since he has no competition, it is clear he puts on airs and finds himself to be rather important, perhaps more important than he actually is. Sometimes, the Order reminds him that he is not the only soulwarden, and even if he was, they survived quite well long before he ever arrived. It is not a reminder he enjoys. Bio by Tues. | xxxxx |
