Youth
When Clark was young he would listen to the story's the other guardians told, story's of adventure and self-discovery and making a home. But by the time he had grown into an adult and all of his guardian peers had given into the Urge in turn, and left to find their individual Charge’s, Clark realized that he had been left behind. The only guardian without a Charge, alone among them all. So, he left. Maybe his Charge was still out there, waiting for him, and his Urge would come too late for them.
Wandering
For months, and then years, Clark wandered Sorneth, seeking his elusive Charge, still waiting, hoping, for his Urge to come and tell him where to go. Along the way he met many dragons, and he helped them. Some needed a friend, others a guide or a mentor, still others just some food and someone to watch over their sleep. Seeing his fellow travelers, Clark asked for nothing but they gave him much. Their friendship, their thanks and trust, gifts worth much more than anything material to the searching guardian. Eventually he grew tired of their odd looks and pitying stares when the conversation inevitably led to his Search, and he made up a cover story. His ‘Charge’ was to protect the innocent and his journey was to fulfill that Charge. And he did love saving those that needed help, he loved making a difference in these dragons lives… But it wasn't really his Charge, because he had none.
Greater
Perhaps it doesn't matter. Every single day, Clark makes the choice to help others, every day he reaffirms who he is, without the need for it to be his Charge. Clark does the right thing, time and again, simply because it is the right thing, not because he is bound to the duty of helping those in need, but because he choses to. Alone among his kin, Clark chose his Charge, and maybe, that makes him more than they could ever hope to become.
