Asriel
The time traveller |
Asriel knew of all things that could happen, he knew he could affect all of the things that were happening in his time. He had finished his mission, but he could not bare leaving his closest friends, or his clanmates. He decided after saving the clan from being destroyed, he didn’t want to return to his original time. He could do better here,in this time. He could make sure that nothing ever happens to the clan. He could even teach the hatchlings of science and technology. He wanted to organize a small meeting once,or twice, a week for clanmates wanting to further their knowledge. He made sure that he did not teach them of the future, even though many asked what may come. He always replied with, “If you want to know what happens, you will have to wait to find out!” |

Time, as it turns out, is malleable, a series of choices and crossroads. Looking forward it is a haze of options, a maze of decisions. But looking back, it is easy to pinpoint the exact moment things went right - or wrong. Asriel was the best of the best. He had the highest marks from the Institute. He had spent years studying the flow of time-space, studying the effects of single actions on the flow of time as a whole. The destruction of The Clan, the ancient group of dragons so old it's name had been lost to the annals of history, had caused ripple effects clear through to the present. Scholars and scientists agreed - if The Clan had been saved, the future could be as well. Asriel, the best and the brightest, volunteered.Time-travel was dicey, they told him. They could not guarantee he would arrive in time to change anything, or he might arrive years too early. And once his mission was completed, he must find some way of proving, through the intervening years, that he was ready to return home. Still, he persisted. The time-loop was jarring, and left lasting marks on his form - dark discolorations on his extremities from lost blood flow. He found himself in a place the ancients had called the Scarred Wasteland, tendrils of disease leaking out into surrounding lands. He saw the carnage of battle, two dragons standing amidst a field of fallen enemies. He had found the battle of Azaell and Asiel, the leaders of The Clan, and knew he was in the right place. These two were destined for partnership, for greatness. If they stood together they would lead The Clan to glory. But they had parted ways at the battle, and destruction had come. Asriel had to act. He was a cousin of Azael, he told them, and was in awe of their prowess in battle, their form, their partnership. Surely together they must lead a mighty clan. Somewhere deep within Asriel felt the shift of the time-line. With his intervention he had cemented the partnership, and The Clan would flourish. He accompanied the two back to their new home on the vast Sundial Terrace. And for a time, he waited, hoping to hear somehow from his own time, his own home. As the weeks became months, though, he wondered what ramifications the changing timeline would have had on his reality. He became a part of the clan, teaching hatchlings of science and technology, of things unknown in this era. He grew to love the clan. And as the months became years, he had to ask himself - did he really want to leave? |
