Biography
Arbiter
Under the suspicion that Clan Zorya's objectives were slipping in his absence, Ialdabaoth introduced Jackal to their governing body in hopes that the Mirror would reign in his more defiant subordinates. And to their mixed approval, Jackal appeared to be as humorless, shrewd and uncompromising as the Grand Thaumaturgist had promised.
Punishments for violating Clan Zorya's laws are determined by its Leader and Council, but it is specifically Jackal's job to apply and interpret the laws as written by their Founders. He is painfully thorough and makes no secret of his disdain for delinquency. Many would prefer a swift execution over one of Jackal's pedantic lectures.
Regulating a clan whose goals appear to transgress the very laws of nature, however, can be difficult to wrap his mind around. When faced with thaumaturgists that culture samples of the Shade and regard violent explosions as "progress," Jackal can only sputter like a busted kettle before throwing his hands up in defeat.
Jackal's closest ally is Ibis, who assists him in her capacity as the Clan Scribe. Her dire, taciturn disposition meshes well with Jackal's temperament and he has grown to rely on her sobering advice when frustration threatens to cloud his judgement. Similarly, Orrery, as Captain of the Guard, has proven herself to be cooperative, but is not afraid to critique the severity of his verdicts when warranted.
Clan Zorya's leader, Circe, regards Jackal's existence as a personal insult. She has made it her mission to prod him into shouting himself hoarse within the first three minutes of every meeting.
Jackal does not speak of his former clan, except to snap that it lacked the absurd minutiae of his current home. He has no sense of humor whatsoever. Anything he says that can be construed as humor is a horrible accident. How he came to meet Ialdabaoth is unknown, but his deference to the Grand Thaumaturgist seems to fluctuate from a place of awe to abject terror.
