“Just let go of the things that happened today and enjoy your night, let your worries away.”
Three in the morning is Gauche's favorite time. In the peace of the night, he would stand, silently, and let the noises of the night filter their way to him. Leaves rustling in the breeze, Fallout Streak's hatchlings moving sleepily in their nests, the odd distant explosion of an experiment gone wrong, his clanmates muttering in their sleep, and the scratching of Aria's quill on parchment. Everything filtered its way to his sensitive ears where he innately understood its origin and cause. This sensitivity to sound was the gift that made him cherish the night and work as Clan Astheryl's Night Guard, although keen eyesight in the dark was definitely a bonus as well. The bustle of the day, with all its many noises and chattering and goings on, was a complicated time for a dragon who could hear everything. Even though Gauche could easily pick apart the mess of sound and trace each one back to its origin, it sometimes became overwhelming and he preferred the peace of the night when he watched over his sleeping clanmates and Aria as she wrote her latest chapter, keeping him company with her presence. But Aria was his beloved mate and she and this entire clan were his Charge. So intertwined together were they that Gauche would have been hard-pressed to choose between them if forced to. Even though the nights called to him, the day is equally important because that was the time the rest of his clan led their lively lives, and thus Gauche sleeps just as the sun is coming over the horizon and wakes again during the middle of the morning bustle. The lack of sleep never seems to bother him, for he wakes up bright-eyed and fresh, ready to watch over his clanmates after what others might call only a nap, but a Java Sparrow or two does help.
