The Widow

Tadonai was a cheerful fellow with little worry in his life until the lovely Anai came in to the picture. She was not extraordinary in appearance but to him she was the image of perfection. Unfortunately she was a sickly dragon who was unable to travel as he had liked but they bore beautiful children together. Most left the nest soon after they were able and rarely returned after finding adventure elsewhere. This left Anai with a hole in her heart and led to her eventual passing.

Tadonai vowed to never let a lady catch his eye again and continued on in life as a traveling mage up until he set a curse upon a young lady who had been plaguing a town with false hopes. He only meant to transform her and leave but as any man would, he liked a challenge and she was the most difficult of all. It had been a few months since he had set a draconic curse upon Infiniti and surprisingly she saw no reason to leave his side.

"Do you hate me?" He questioned knowing that her answer would always be the same even if she felt differently. She was stubborn and determined to show it which drew him to her. The purple haired woman glared at him and crossed her leg over the other while reaching for a drink of wine. He rolled his eyes at the way that she ignored him although he knew that she was much happier in her new form where she could take to the skies and didn't have to depend on trickery to live.

"Why did you do it?" Slipped from her lips for the first time. His expression darkened as he glanced in her direction. The similarities were striking. The composed way that she held herself, the curve of her lips, even the way she sipped her drink reminded him of his departed wife.

"You remind me of someone that I don't wish to forget," he replied softly and a new look came to her eyes. It was not one of pity but understanding as if she too had gone through her fair share of darkness.

"Then here I shall stay," her eyes broke away from his gaze as she looked into the abyss of her drink before downing the rest. "I'm guessing it was a girl? A lover perhaps?"

"My wife," he said hating the word lover as if it were venom. Infiniti let a smile creep into her face and then placed a hand over his own. Tadonai looked up and met her with a sad smile. She fully understood but he was unable to find the nerve to question her about her own life story. As soon as their hands fell apart, he left her to her drink and retired for the night. The haunting image of her purple irises consuming his dreams as his heart moved on from the one who passed to Infiniti, forgetting his promise and not caring. They were two broken halves that with time could be made whole.
