✤ ✤ ✤ IN THE EMPEROR'S WAKE ✤ ✤ ✤

A deep, distant, unnatural roar sent mortal bolts of terror through the Mirror's heart, launching her upright and out of a dreamless sleep. After a moment spent fruitlessly trying to pry her eyes open, the dragon reached up to feel the blindfold covering all four. No amount of tugging managed to even loosen it, it was sealed on, magically.
She next noted the incredible weight of her arms, and the clinking of chains when she shook them. Following the chains to their source, she found that the bricks they were bound to had been reduced beyond rubble, freeing her from the wall. The Mirror could leave, as long as she didn't mind dragging the chains behind her.
She took a few shaky, tentative steps, the rubble rolling and sliding out from beneath her talons as she fought for balance. When her claws landed in a puddle, she was only able to pretend it wasn't blood for a moment before the stench hit. Another step, and she discovered its origin. Her stomach heaved at the sick squelch of fur and blood and meat and bones and... keys?
Yes, a rope of keys around what she determined were the remains of a neck. Her talons shook violently as the sorted through them, trying one after the next on her cuffs.
The stench of the body was sickening.

It is delectable...

...WHAT.
She scrambled back, tripping over her chains. Her stomach roared with hunger, seeding in her a deep craving for the dragon scattered among the bricks.

That is a PERSON. She thought back furiously. A TUNDRA. I have KNOWN Tundras.

It couldn’t have been. It was too big. It was something else, and it chained you up. It deserves what it got and more, and you are starving. It’s dead. It won’t notice a bite is missing.

The Mirror shook her head furiously, fumbling with the keys. The lock clicked as her cuffs came undone. She scrambled and tripped over the massive remains as she felt her way down the hall. Her stomach panged mercilessly for the dead thing.

Maybe they’re just an extra hairy Imperial or something. I KNOW a dragon when I smell one, and I REFUSE to eat something that once spoke and flew and learned and had a family.

It doesn’t do any of those things anymore. You can’t ignore your nature forever. Aren’t you hungry, little Mirror? That’s a lot of meat going to waste.

She didn’t respond, tripping and scraping her way along, picking up speed. The smell of blood grew fresh, swimming in her head and spurring the hunger. Her pure, jackrabbit adrenaline kept her moving, kept her numb as she spilled further blood, crashing down the hall and slashing her bound wings on protruding iron bars, bloodying her talons in her desperate scrape through the detritus. Panic roared in her ears while the voice hissed on, egging her to turn back.

A wall. It put up close to no resistance as the Mirror barreled through the bricks. A cold breeze fought the hot sunlight on her skin, and the hunger dropped away into oblivion, taking the voice with it. All was silent. Her eyes stung, feeling the bright sun even through the blindfold. The dragon was gripped with an instant migraine, between her collision and the light, but she could think again, and the important questions began to flood in.

Where am I? Why was I chained up? What is my name? What happened here? Am I the only survivor?

What was that hunger?

What do I do now?

The ground rumbled distantly beneath her, and she wondered briefly if one of these quakes had been the cause of the wreckage.
The unnatural roar that had woken her echoed over the hills again and she scrambled to her talons. Whatever made that sound was HUGE, and was almost certainly causing the quakes. It was far off for now, but she didn’t wanna be anywhere near here when it circled back. The dragon began feeling her way around what seemed to be the ruins of a courtyard.

She needed to find shelter. She needed help. She needed food. She needed light, if that’s what kept the voice quiet, and as a Shadow dragon, she couldn’t make her own.

The Mirror paused.
I am a Shadow dragon, aren’t I? I know that, at least. I know one thing about myself. There would be more to learn in the Tangled Woods, but I can’t let the voice resurface. I need to stay somewhere bright.

She took a deep breath, steeling herself. A lump formed in her throat, homesickness for a place she didn’t even remember.

I can’t go home yet.
