Melek
{ pronunciation guide } Nickname: ??? ♦ origin / role Looking for Light (written by Disillusionist) (artist) - (song) |
Melek was bad at magic.
Not all forms of magic, certainly. He could play a stirring song to whip up a breeze, he could start a little fire, and he could conjure rainbow bubbles that popped on the noses of his siblings. But Light magic, the birthright of all dragons in the Sunbeam Ruins...He could never make it work. It always went wrong. What should have been a simple illusion ended up as static bolts shooting from his claws. A few manes and tails got fried, and some classmates got severely tickled, but it was never right, and that always disappointed Melek.
His parents and other clan members were very understanding. "Perhaps he needs to understand magic more carefully. It might help if he masters other forms of it first."
Melek agreed to give it a try. He was first sent away to the Windswept Plateau, where his teachers taught him Wind magic. They were pleasantly surprised: Melek was as good at Wind magic as he was bad at Light magic; he mastered it within a relatively short time. (All right, it was about 20 years, but to Imperial dragons it's but the blink of an eye!) He passed his final trials with flying colors and was awarded the mark of a Windsong Adept. He wore it proudly as he flew home, where he presented himself to his parents.
They were elated at their child's progress. "Perhaps now, you are ready for Light magic," his mother suggested gently.
Alas, Melek was not. His spells continued to fizzle rather than flash; they went off with a bang instead of glittering. Melek was quite disappointed, but his father took him aside and spoke kindly to him: "It might be best to give it a rest for a while. Your mother and I think it's too soon to send you away again -- why not stay in the Sunbeam Ruins? Take a break from magic and hone your skills in physical combat. I'm sure one of our fellow clans would be happy to train you."
That was how Melek came to live with Skystorm and Ashweather's clan. They were very welcoming and introduced Melek to the other trainees, including a pretty Imperial named Aegis. She had come from the Southern Icefield, but she fit right in with the Light clan, and she and Melek took to each other immediately. They became training buddies -- they spent many hours practicing combat, and nearly as many hours falling over and laughing at each other's mistakes.
From time to time Melek would take lessons with the clan's mages. He picked up other forms of magic easily -- but still the Lightweaver's sorcery eluded his magical grasp.
This only made Melek more determined to make progress. He was now in a whole new clan of dragons, and he wanted to do his best for them, too. He started to tiptoe around them, afraid of being laughed at or worse, causing another minor disaster. Aegis noticed, but she, too, understood. She patted Melek's shoulder and told him that it was all right. Everybody needed a break once in a while.
Melek sighed. "I've been given breaks practically since Day One." He reminded her of how, instead of being pushed to study Light magic, he'd gone away by himself to learn Wind magic. He was quite proud of that chapter in his life, but Aegis frowned slightly. "It must have been very lonely. Melek, perhaps now, you don't need a break. Maybe you need a friend."
Shortly after, she presented Melek with a familiar, a Light Sprite. It was a cheerful little creature, and Melek stared at it, transfixed. He could hardly believe his good fortune.
He gently objected: Light Sprites were reserved only for the greatest of Light mages! There was no way he, a bumbling incompetent, could care for such a creature. The Sprite stamped its tiny foot in disbelief, and Aegis frowned, too. Aegis was just a bit scary when she frowned.
So Melek listened as she declared, "Those Light mages don't need their Light Sprites -- but you do! She will be a great help to you, I'm sure. Besides, hasn't it been said that the Lightweaver's servants choose their own masters? Look how much she likes you!" Aegis' expression softened again.
She told Melek, "Being given a break and having friends to help you are not the same thing. I'm sure the Lightweaver will reveal her magic to you, all in due time. This Sprite will help you find your way."
Melek was deeply moved by her kindness and generosity. He looked at her with loving eyes and humbly promised to do his best for her and their new clan. His Light Sprite bonded quickly to him, too. It became an invaluable friend, not just for what it could teach him, but also for its unfailing optimism even when Melek's failures threatened to overwhelm him.
It has been many years since then. Melek and Aegis have become a mated pair. They still train together, and laugh with each other as much as they did back when they first came to the clan. Melek has also gone on to master other forms of magic, but he still wears his Windsong Adept jewels in memory of the first magic he mastered. He will take it off in the future, he thinks, when he has finally achieved mastery of Light magic. That day is not far off. He has many friends to gentle his journey and help him find his way.
