Excessive Defence System
Lasers Good
Being a fortress, the home of Clan _______ is particularly well-defended, even if its days as a major military stronghold as long past. Warded walls, a guard of well-trained dragons willing to defend their home, and even an impractically large cannon that's really only useful for intimidation. But only Kane and a select few dragons know of the island's true last line of defence. A lone pillar on the southern tip of the island, which most would assume to be a defunct lighthouse.
The true lighthouse is the tip of of tallest sheltering chalcedony peak on the island, which lights up at night by the magic of some other dragons in the clan. The square stone pillar and the obelisk that watches over it would seem quite unnecessary then. It's not even that impressive as far as tall stone things go — Aeric's tower has it beat by a long shot! But as Kane sees it, he has Aeric absolutely destroyed in the having a structure that is actually useful department. For while the obelisk might have been carved from simple slate (Kane wanted obsidian or onyx, but the clan council decided it didn't need to be quite so evil looking), it's the core of celestine that really matters. That, and the particularly powerful arcane generator buried below it. Quite simply, the 'lighthouse' is a deployment platform for a small crystal pyramid, which when charged with arcane magic can fire a deadly laser at anything which threatens the clan. Or a lethal beam of radiation. Or a crushing ray of gravity magic. Or a... you get the picture. Kane's ingenuity when it comes to inventing new ways of causing directed harm with arcane magic apparently know no bounds. And more worryingly, he's never blown himself or his work up once! Those constant setbacks and hospital visits are usually the only thing preventing arcane dragons from becoming existential threats to all of dragonkind. That's why it's no surprise that not only did Kane's original clan feel quite unsafe keeping him around, but that even Clan _______ prefers it when he keeps his death rays to himself, in a little workshop down on the southern coast. Kane doesn't really understand the issue the others have. There's far worse things out there than a little lasering or radiation poisoning. This murder tower is to protect all of them from the real dangers out there! He makes sure to tell his clanmates over dinner about all the awful things the obelisk will do to anyone who invades the island, so that they can rest safely knowing the clan will remain peaceful for as long as it stands. He's even created a tiny version of of the pillar, so that you can carry it around in your pocket for security. It's nothing more than a regular pink laser pointer, which has greatly disappointed some of the members of the clan who weren't too wary of the device to try using it. Of course, Kane has never actually had an opportunity to activate the obelisk. This frustrates him, despite knowing that never needing to use the tower is clearly the best result possible. It's simply annoying, in the same way that it's annoying he'll never get a chance to try out those techniques for surviving being caught flying during a hurricane. Or any of the twenty different ways to put out his mane if it catches fire — without ruining any of the styling. So instead he's tried adding other features to the not-lighthouse, ones that he might be allowed to use every once in a while. (He's not going to make it work as a lighthouse though, that would be boring.) His first attempt was to set up a laser light show, which oddly enough nobody wanted to attend. So instead he's shifted over to an alarm system, with a collection of sirens, bells, and magical spells designed to implant a quick attention-grabbing buzz into your mind. So far, Kane has managed to thoroughly annoy the rest of the clan with his tests of the alert system, so that means it's working! When in stoneform, Kane becomes a statue of dark onyx. But unlike most obelisks, his eyes still glow a brilliant arcane pink instead of appearing to be carved of ordinary stone. All obelisks can still see as statues, so this should just be an odd quick that makes statue Kane a lot more frightening at night. However, it's actually the result of Kane secretly incorporating some of his projects into himself. His hope is that eventually he'll be fully animate as a statue. But for now, all he's trying to do is enable himself to use magic while in stoneform. Kane's horns are split due to an injury when he was young, causing some of them to grow in in an odd spiral. He doesn't talk about it much, mostly because there's no way to make dropping a heavy cauldron of cold soup on your own face sound impressive. |
