Ajani - The Loyal First, there is nothing. Then, there is light. After, there is nothing but light. She learns this, and everything that follows is simple, for if she is faithful, the light will guide her. The priest that rears her is clear: she will be strong and true, and she will be rewarded. He does not tell her what will happen if she is not, but she is a perceptive child, if a child at all, so she is well aware. She devotes herself to the light and its temple, and does not think about who she would be without it. The old sentinel’s body is still warm, but she does not have time to mourn. She is draped in silk, given the brilliant blades of a sentinel, and sworn into the temple’s guard for as long as she lives. She had thought she had known the light before, but as she stands at the high priestess’ side, solemn and splendid, she feels its power pour into her, heavenly and righteous. In those moments, she feels the presence of something much greater than everything she has ever known, and she knows that she will never be the same. Her name is Ajani, she is a sentinel, and she will be a sentinel until the day she dies. It does not take her long to realize that she was raised for this, carefully guided onto the path of the protector. She does not mind knowing that her childhood was not like the others’. Her own parents would not have done such a thing as ensuring a fitting future for her, and they had proved it by leaving her at the temple’s step. She does not once waver in the principles of her upbringing. With every waking moment, she becomes more deadly, more determined. She grows into her duties with calm, quiet grace. The forest, with its towering trees and shimmering shafts of light, is under her care, and she grows to love it as if it were an extension of herself. The temple, a beacon of radiant light, is her home, and the center of her world. She protects it accordingly. Abiding the high priestess’ orders, Ajani is always poised just out of reach. She would prefer to be at Io’s side, but she understands how important the forest and the temple are to the other woman. It is the only time she does not follow her initial oath to the letter, and she does not regret it. The warm expression on the priestess’ face that she sees from afar is worth it, for Io’s happiness is just as important as her safety. If she were anyone else, Ajani would have been lonely, but she knows in her bones that she was born for this. She does not need to trust anyone except the woman she is sworn to serve. As long as she does not waver, the light will show her the way, and for that, she needs no-one but Io. If her heart betrays her, so be it, as long as her mind does not go with it. She will still have the trees, the temple, and all they stand for, just as she does now. She will not falter.
