Biography
Misty shadows swirl beneath the surface of deep waters. To most, they unveil nothing but a curious view, but to some, such as Kraken, they reveal glimpses of the future. Having left his home in the Sea of a Thousand Currents, Kraken found refuge with the Aqueorrem pod settled in Clan LockCharge. While he is not originally one of Euryale’s subjects, he gladly accepts her leadership, and in exchange, offers his oracular services.
Euryale, something of a cynic, does not always believe in Kraken’s visions, but she is all too aware that forces beyond have always existed, afterall, what else could have caused Tidelord’s departure from the sea? With that healthy caution in mind, she listens to Kraken, and he in turn, attempts to present the least foggy vision he can. The truth is, while some diviners such as Precision see a narrow scope of what will happen within their purview, Kraken’s visions often include larger movements in the universe. He may see pivotal events that will not come to fruition for many centuries, and yet, their happening is quintessential to time itself.
With so much to see and puzzle out, it is no surprise that Kraken spends most of his time squirreled away in his den, enjoying the dim lighting and cool air of his den. Many days, his powers cause debilitating headaches, and the oracle is no where to be found for several weeks at a time.
Still, when he emerges, appearing drawn and weak, he usually has something in the way of a message for his queen. Euryale, if Kraken has any weakness at all, it is his abiding love for his leader. Perhaps more love than is strictly necessary to loyalty. Were it not for his dedication to his art, Kraken would discard his role and plead to settle down with Euryale, perhaps even hatch a nest or two. Still, as Kraken knows well, the obstacles to their union are two-fold: firstly, that he cannot abandon his post as oracle for love clouds the sight into truth, and secondly, that Aqueorrem mate for life, and Euryale has already loved and lost her mate.
Thus, tucking his affection into a deep corner of himself in hopes it would one day disappear, Kraken instead devotes himself to the mysteries of divination. For a price, he may attempt to read a fortune or two for the locals, but his findings are seldom substantial enough to guarantee return customers. But then, he can offer one service that some find irresistible: that of a medium.
In particular for Lorelei, who lost her only child years before, Kraken’s ability to glimpse the world beyond is invaluable. Despite that all he can really say is, “the child is at rest,” these are great words to a grieving mother who constantly wonders where her child’s spirit has fled. Once in a while, unable to help himself, Kraken will look for those he has lost in his own life, but they prove difficult to find, as love does cloud the sight. He did, perhaps out of selfishness, glimpse the lost soul of Euryale’s mate, but sensing only loneliness and sorrow from that wandering spirit, he never dared to look again.
As the veil moves beneath the waves, Kraken watches and dwells on what he sees. And even in the desert, where water seems a dream, still the waves are forever crashing in his ears, their eerie song promising secrets to those who listen. And Kraken has never stopped listening.
