Windfall was made of air, and her wings were full of glory. She soared through the sky, gliding on an air current she could not seen but trusted to guide her. Behind her, Iyld flew in less certain strokes. His wings were still weak with youth, but if she did not give him his space then he would not learn. “Spread them wide,” she coaxed her son, spinning in the air and letting herself drop a fraction to be flying beneath Iyld instead. His paws brushed her spine, and he appeared comforted by this. Iyld blinked at her with wide eyes, fearful. But trusting. “We are so high up!” His voice was willowy in the wind, but she caught it still and grinned. He spoke the truth, for the savannah was far below and merely a brush stroke of colour. The sight of it would never stop amazing Windfall, but she had always delighted in such things. The power of being a dragon was never so realized as when in flight. When her son stuttered in his flight, Windfall wanted to carry him into the air. To hold him close as she had at his birth and assure him that there will come a time when he will cherish moments such as this: the air being warm around them, the sun beginning to melt into the horizon, and a beloved companion to take to wing with you. “Trust in the strength of your wings,” Windfall said, voice warm and reassuring. “They are my wings, and your grandparents too.” On and on and on. Iyld still looked worried, but he raised his gaze to study the world ahead instead of below. With a furrowed brow, her little hatchling worked tilted and bobbed and, in time, straightened his flight. It was like magic when his wings caught the air currents comfortably enough, the change from rocking to smooth immediate in his flight. His grin was immediate. “I did it!” “Yes!” Windfall laughed out the word, flying in a delighted loop around her son. Iyld began to soar with more enthusiasm, feet kicking at the air as if he were swimming. Below, the savannah began to bleed the black rock and magma of the Ashfall Waste. Perhaps they would rest for a time there, but in the coming days they would need to move and move again. In the sunset, warmed by the love of her son, Windfall could not picture the dragon they were fleeing from. She was certain Iyld had not even understood. If she was fortunate and wore only smiles, perhaps he never would. But they were flying, and he was alive, and the world was changing beneath them. This would be enough. It had to be. | blankblank |
